Thats awesome. Im glad that they have 10 speeds because that's what i learned on so it should be pretty easy to get familar with their trucks.

DAY 3
WOW, WHAT A GREAT DAY!!!!!
We spent the morning in the city going thru the tightest turns they could find and all 3 of us(the 4th guy is falling behind and didn't spend any time with us today) did PERFECTLY, nobody hit anything but the right gears!
THEN the fun began!...We drove 50 miles to Black Mountain which is 2800' high with a 6% grade that takes 6 miles to get to the top...We each took turns running up the mountain shifting up and down the whole time, either single up or single or doubling down, everyone performed PERFECTLY!...Then came the downhill which is 35mph and we were driving a 75000lb truck so it was VERY easy to exceed that...We were taught how to double down(or just one gear) and again, everyone performed PERFECTLY!...It was a true confidence builder knowing you CAN shift while going downhill with NO problems and with little to no concern of burning up your brakes, they weren't even warm when we checked them after each run...That may be old news to some, but to a newbie, it was eye-opening and a major confidence booster after being told in school it was such a no-no...
The next 2 days we do backing, my personal favorite, and then qualcomm, logbooks, Watkins procedures and videos next Monday and Tuesday...They hope to have us in our trucks next Wednesday!!!!!!!
Plus the people here have been over the top friendly and willing to share their knowledge and experience with us....We are all extremely excited to have chosen WS and look forward to joining this "family"!...
I hope to meet AT tomorrow when he gets here!American-Trucker and wulfman75 Thank this. -
Keep that no-no filed away..................

Great job!! I have traveled Black Mountain hundreds of times and always see smoking hot brakes and a couple in the escape ramps over the years.
Many have died on that down grade...
Congrats! Keep up the good work!walstib Thanks this. -
Forgive me if this sounds crazy, I'm new to the forum, not sure if this topic has been discussed already, forgive me if it has.
So the trainer (today) taught you all how to down shift, going down a 6% grade with 75k ?
- I learned from my father who drove for 38years, my Grad-father owned a logging company in the early 70's and my family, blah, blah blah ... you know how it goes ... With that being said, I never went to a Cdl school so I'm not really sure what techniques they teach. I started out O/O under my fathers wing, so I never had the orientation week, out with the trainer experience.
What did they teach in school ??
- I was always told "try" not to EVER have to downshift on a grade %.
I'm not saying that's the right-way or wrong-way, it's just how I've been doing it for years.
When I get to the top, that's when I'll put it in whatever gear I PLAN on using all the way down. It's normally a few mph under the speed limit (never been crazy about flying down mountains with no wings), not saying that I'm not guilty of a few flyby's but under normal day to day driving I'm in no hurry to get to the bottom. I'll catch you in a few miles ..walstib Thanks this. -
We did it as follows...Either in 8th or 9th gear, once at 40-45mph(1600rpms), LAY HARD on the brakes until 900rpms, clutch in, raise rpms to 1600, double down and it goes into gear as smooth as silk!...Rinse and repeat as needed!...If you don't need to, don't, but if you do, we know how!

What did they teach in school ?

so double down as in down 2 gears? of course i'll figure this all out when it's my turn starting the 29th haha but just curious
