O.K. Long story short. I got my C.D.L from a local school in my state last March. I have been trying to find a local job ever since except for summer since I was on vacation for 2.5 months. The problem is every local company wants experience, so it does look like I'm gonna have to do OTR. The reason I was trying to avoid OTR in the first place is because I'd like to be home everyday, I always hear bad things about starter companies, and they pay low money. Now, since I'm most likely gonna have to do OTR, which started company do you think is the best for me?

Werner, Swift, U.S. Xpress, C.R. England, Stevens, Rhoel, Pam, etc.

I am from Massachusetts BTW. I know Swift has a terminal in NY, so would that be important for me?

Yep, that's pretty much every truckers situation! However, since you waited so long between when you went to school and finding a job guess what, you are going to have to go back to school before any one will take you. As for your list above that is a perfect list of the companies to stay away from. Try checking out careersingear or bigrigjobs. These are pretty good sites to find some companies in your area that are hiring. Also the OOIDA website usually has good info and links to reputable companies. Good luck!

I'm wondering if I made a mistake by going into this industry. I didn't know trucking was such a low pay and just an awful industry in general. I mean, I do like trucks. I'd like to drive a nice long hood Pete or KW some day. I'm just wondering if I should have gone to college instead.

I'm currently at orientation for TMC. So far, this seems to be a great place to start. They have been very up front about their expectations, and the training is going well. The hotel is nice, and the lunch they provide has been good so far. As of right now I would recommend them to anyone who wants some structure in ther career. Hopefully that won't change if I make it out with a trainer.
