Hey guys! New to the site.
I have about 5 years driving 53 foot semis in Chicago, been out of the game for about 4 years and was thinking about getting back in.
My concern is the city pedestrians of chicago being all over the place recently as compared to a few years back and I was wondering if any of you pros had some advice for me on right hand turns and watching for pedistrians at the same time. I have been doing alot of reading on different driving news and the alarming thing that I am seeing is the rate of drivers not know they have hit a pedistrian, something that never was on my mind when I drove before. So my question is what technique or things you do make it so that you are comfortable knowing you made a right hand turn knowing you didnt hit a person or an important object in either direction?
thanks guys!
nice site!

keep forever LOOKING in ALL your mirrors, take the turn SLOWLY, and wide to avoid climbing the curbs, and just be aware at all times, NEVER letting your guard down by answering a cell phone, blue tooth, whatever, or lighting up a cigarette, cigar, eating, drinking or whatever, till you are WAY clear of this situation.

thanks for the quick response. i have always been a cautious driver. i will never let myself get distracted by a phone or something like that.....the risk factor is huge when distracted.

I drove 48 footers into San Fransisco for a few years straight. You really need to pay complete attention to driving; no radio, cellphone, nothing. I always ran with my lights on too, might not have helped but who knows?
Gotta watch those frakking bike messengers. I think they are all suicidal myself. They never slow down or stop for anything. freaking idiots.
Don't forget all the old people too. They cant hear too good so they get killed a lot in SF by trucks, crossing the streets and such.dewssox79 and jakebrake12 Thank this. -
What everyone else said and always, always, always try to protect your right rear even though some places/turns its hard to do that. Some people have no problem riding up on the curb to get around you
dewssox79 Thanks this. -
yes the bike messangers in chicago are horrible, and we have the universities downtown where all the #### students are ipodded up and have no idea of their surroundings. I mean i did it for 5 years, but still consider myself a noob since there is always something that i need to learn.
Now do you guys generally angle out a bit with the tractor, keeping the trailer in the right lane, and go into the opposite lane of traffic once the tractor is turned? i pretty much have no choice but to do this in the city. -
I smell a troll.
