I work for a municipality in AZ. The city requires me to maintain a CDL. Is it a law requiring a city employee to carry and maintain a CDL? If I drove a commercial vehicle under a suspended CDL did I break a Law or just violate city policy? I am not a Fire Fighter or Police. I work in the Streets Division.
Are Municipality Employees required to maintain a CDL? Who is exempt?

for instance here in New England we have the typical highway dept... they hire general laborers, that do various jobs. but now say it starts snowing, well now they NEED back up plow drivers to relive the regular drivers during a storm. now of course you are in Arizona, hardly any snow there, but they still WILL NEED you from time to time.
out here, it is required to obtain and maintain a CDL while in any type of city, state, town employment, but it isn't any law.
if you have a suspended license, well then they MUST know this so they can work around you, for now.........because with things being the way they are, if you give them reason to fire you, they will, for a person that CAN get and maintain a CDL and by the way, yes, it is usually only a class B...
oh and here's a brief thought.......at my former employer..... we had a contract with Amtrak to train ALL the Amtrak workers....how's that for "requiring to get, keep and maintain a CDL"...?????heyns57 Thanks this. -
If you drive anything over 26K GVW you need the CDL...

Now the suspension. Is it because of to many tickets and just the CDL is suspended or is your whole license suspended. If so I'd let them know.
If in either one of these scenarios you were to have an accident: 1)no CDL 2) licence suspension, you and the city or county are wide open for a law suit and you will be caught up in both of them as you know of both problems.
If you're desperate for a job you need to get the CDL or the licence out of suspension.
And as general information the CDL portion of a lisence can be suspended as it's actually an attachment (endorsement) to your Class F or car lisence. Yep! You can not get a CDL until you have driven that car! All the "rules of the road" are given in the drivers maanual and then the CDL adds more governing the operation of a truck. If for some reason your "F" is suspened then the CDL goes with it. -
It depends on the City, County and State. Here in Colo., anything over 26KGVW they have to have a CDL of appropriate class.
