making a right turn i do what is commonly known as the "button hook" turn. i basically hug the right side curbing so much that even a bike messenger can't squeeze through. this also allows my truck to swing a bit wider but yet still not cross over the yellow line either to my immediate left of into on coming traffic.

i hate city driving myself, but it is part of the job. we all just have to try our best each and every time, but its when we let our guard down by some type of distraction, even that mini-skirted gal walking on by......!!! (as long as it's a REAL gal of course....!!!:biggrin_2559:)

Someone with five years of experience, driving in Chicago needs to ask this? What's your agenda? Someone you know get splashed by slush or have to step back because a big truck took a turn too sharp? Who are you trying to sue?

BTW: Rerun is right. About the button hook.

not even close buddy. but thanks.

5 years experience when i started driving at 20 years old, stopped when I was 25, and now I am married and 31 years old and have been way out of the game for a while, and had some questions. When i was 20-25 i was a youngin that did not really think about safety as much as i do now as i am older with a family.

you are completley wrong about me and my questions.

5 years of driving doesnt make me an expert by any means, im looking for opinions from people who have had alot of experience. anyone who has driven for 5 years, 3 years, whatever...and feel confident and or ####y about their driving their knowledge are the ones who let their gaurd down and have accidents...just my opinion.

my backround: obtained my cdl from coca cola when I was 20ish in alsip il, began driving for them for 6 months and left due to 40 stops a day. most of my experience is with cpc logistics driving for walgreens, and nuway.

city driving is such a pain, ya got the bike messangers, and in chicago what i really really get annoyed with is the CTA which is the constant running of buses that crowd the street every direction. in the summer you get the kids on the crotch rockets and 3 times the amount of people walking around.

my issue with local companies was sending me out all the time in 53 ft trailers that were not fully loaded when we had 45 ft trailers just sitting in the yard looking pretty, it would have made it so much easier. I continue to see local companies sending their drivers in the city with 53 ft trailers. I am trying to find a job right now for local p&d and looking at the equipment i wonder why some companies dont use more 45 ft trailers or even pups.

Welcome to the forum! Don't let Injun discourage you from asking questions. She gets a little hot and bothered sometimes!

As for the hooking, don't short yourself any turning space. Swing as wide as you need to and if you have to sit in the intersection until everyone backs up then do so! Yeah it makes people upset sometimes but it is better than you having to back it up or taking out a pole or pedestrian. Keep the questions up, a lot has probably changed since you have been out there. Good luck!

It probably won't take you longer than a day to get back in the seat of things!

If I am wrong about you, I apologize. I am woman enough to admit my mistakes. I hope I am wrong. You seem like a decent person.

You must understand, though, I've seen people pop onto the board to ask a seemingly innocuous question only to find out the person asking is gathering information to use against one or all of us either in a court of law or in some sort of rule-making/legislation. I have seen more than one driver literally lose everything because some lawyer saw him or her as deep pockets. If I can prevent just one driver from going through that with my skepticism, it will make it worthwhile.

If you are who you say you are, follow the steps Rerun put out for you and 99% of the time, all will go well.

    Regards,

    I

thanks injun, i am one of those people who have seen drivers get taken to the cleaners and it is unfortunate. For me and my question in this thread it kind is on the same topic that you are actually describing, im more concerned that it might happen to me, and i worry about what it would do to me and my family. that is the reason for the thread, so you were right to some degree just i am the one who is concerned about being a victim of the flashy lawyers going for me.

As i look at this forum there are so many people on here it is incredible, so I can understand you have seen people post trying to get info on drivers....so i do understand why you were thinking what you were thinking. im not mad at ya :) just wanted to clear the air.
