Ok, so i got an optima yellowtop deep-cell agm---model D34/78. A Husky (home depot brand)750 watt inverter. And a portable, radiator type electric heater.
NOTE: that i am testing inside a car because this simulates the approximate size and conditions of a truck cab/sleeper.
What is happening is that when i have everthing hooked up and turn it on, i'm getting a buzzing sound out of the heater; When you plug it in to a wall outlet, no buzzing. This buzzing sound is a little too loud to sleep comfortable and more importantly it does not sound right to the point where i feel something may be wrong.
a) What's causing this and how to remedy if possible.
b) Would going to a quartz heater be better and get rid of the noise?
Any other practical solutions to get heat?; i need about 8 hours of decent, though Kenya-like levels are unnessesary and unwanted, heat----say around 65 degrees. Small cab/sleeper. i have no other electrical loads, such as tv microwave etc.
Need some APU help........

What is heater rated for, in watts?

your inverter is too small... and probably not designed to run that heater. i fried two power tool battery chargers because i bought a cheapo inverter...
get an ESPAR or Webasto heater.... -
There's a sticker on the side that says w 1500, so i'm ASSuming 1500 watts?
2) Considering the webasto and clones i like them but want to keep costs down. -
the top of the inverter says 750 watts so this won't work!

Ok, so it looks like i either need to get a bigger inverter or move down in heater size. i was not actually wanting to use this heater, but it's what i had available for testing. i would like a smaller heater anyways for portability reasons.
NOTE: that i did not know what questions to ask-----it is/was apparent that as it pertains to electrical matters i do not know what i do not know. Therefore did not know what questions to ask. But you all spurred the thought process and i am learning quick. Thanks.
What works for you? Keep in mind i got a small cab and only need to maintain 65-68ish degrees for about 8 hours. -
It's as easy as PIE Power (watts)= I (Amps) times E (Volts)
if you are going to use a 1000 watt heater that runs on 120 volts you are going to need around 8 1/2 amps. But because you will be running thru an inverter that is NOT 100% efficient you'll need to round up a bit, lets say 10 amps, and for 8 hours would be 80 amp hours. The D34 has only 55 amp hours in it. So not only will your inverter NOT power that big of a heater, the battery would not last the 8 hours with it, even with a bigger inverter. Yeah, i forgot to mention that for testing right now i'm just using one battery, but was thinking that i would have to use at least two in parallel. -
You should be able to get by with a small ceramic heater. I use one in the bedroom of my camper & it will run you out of there if you set it too high. They have a thermostat on them that you can set your desired temperature to. You might look at a battery with a little more juice also. I have found that Optima aren't all they are advertised to be.
