I can go to a PTDI certified school but it will cost me about $5,000 - $6,000, and will take a minimum of 2 months to complete. I have a pplied to a few companies, the only ones that have shown any interest are CR England and Stevens Transport. The CR England school can be paid up front for $1999, or financed for $2999 ($1999 turkey day special?) at i think 18% interest, and, supposedly, a 90 day commitment. Stevens is i think $6000 at like 18% interest, with a 1 year commitment.

Both companies have bad reputations, CR England probably being the worst of the worst, and Stevens is "the best of the worst". Also Stevens has a few guys that post in these forums who support them 100%, and are pretty encouraging to read.

I guess I'm just looking for some advice on what to do here. I have a clean background, and a clean driving record.

Hi Jake, asking between CR and Stevens is like asking to be shot or stoned. I would take Stevens out of the two.

If that's all you got to choose from, Stevens would be my choice. Either way, I hope you're dedicated to what you're about to do and are able to look down the road to better things, cos' you are about to live through the most hellish period of your life.

Get through your first year and move on to better things. Though there are drivers that like working for both so who knows.

have you tried swift? they run their own schools and it comes out to 4,400$ for school and hotel and only takes 3 weeks. i just graduated from swifts school and was fully impressed with the quality of the instructors.

This is where someone will point out the recall of one of the schools, one bad apple and all that mind.

but I agree I have met a few swift trainers, and they all seem very knowledgable from the ones I have met, but I wont judge all based on few, unlike some.

All classrooms objectives are for you to get your CDL. You will accomplish this anywhere.

You are going to have good trainers and bad trainers at all companies. It's kind of luck of the draw. You might ask the recruiter what their qualifications are for a trainer. I wouldn't go with a company that requires anything less than 2 years to be a trainer. A good trainer will help you build a good foundation to start from. Alot of trucking lessons you will learn on your own and the hard way. Stuff that's not taught in schools. There are plenty of hecklers out there to let you know when you are doing wrong. :) and others to help!

Any company you go with is going to pay you pennies the first year. Your objective is to get schooled and get that loan paid off and get some experience without getting in trouble.

What you have offered now, I believe I would take the turkey special, get the loan paid off quick and at 6 months with a clean nose, go somewhere else. Still shop though, there are other options.

Don't know where you live, but if it's East of "The Big River", I'd check into Millis.:biggrin_25525:

Thanks guys for the suggestions.. I did apply to Swift but they dont offer schooling for my location, and Millis rejected my application and would not give me an explanation why except that it's a very competitive position and alot of people applied. Told me to try again in 6 months.

I would definitely rather pay for my own PTDI schooling locally, but for one, I don't have the 6 grand., and 2, I don't even live close to a PTDI certified school., and besides, 2 months is way too long to put my career on hold.

I think my best option would be to use CR England to get my CDL, and bring a big serving spoon to eat their BS for 90 days, then move on to a better company, or better yet, I can just pay the $1999 up front (using a low interest credit card, i hope) and once I get my CDL I can refuse to lease and they will be forced to let me leave amicably.. Stevens requires too long of a commitment. Although I have read on here that they offer the best training.

Anywhere you go, tough it out for 6 months. That's the lowest requirement for finding another job.
