This is probably a good thing to get into because alot of conductors/engineers are from the baby-boomer generation.
These folks are in the process of retiring en masse which will open alot of spots up for younger workers.
So now would probably be a good time to get your foot in the door of a class 1 rr and then you can move up the ranks alot quicker than in years past.

thought about it, but I know a couple of people work for BNSF who despise it, I've also seen how they literally "railroad" their employees for the slightest thing. Your basically working for an arm of the gov't.

Oh puh-leeze. If I hear about one more industry 'that would be good to get into right now because all the baby boomers are going to retire next week' I think I'm going to puke.

So by definition, wouldn't that also mean that now would be a good time to get into trucking? I mean wouldn't some of those baby boomers have become truck drivers way back when? Wouldn't they be retiring also and thus creating a billion and half new trucking job openings in the next 72 hours?

I hired in at the railroad straight out of high school. Became an Engineer when I was 19. Made good money. I was on call the whole time I worked there. It was something I wanted to try, but I always knew I wanted to drive truck. I'm glad I quit and got my CDL. I guess it just depends on what you want to do.

But you could have put in 20 years, retired with a pension, then drove a truck.Like my brother in law David who put 20 years into the military, took his pension and benies and now works his dream job stocking shelves at Target part time every morning at 4AM.:biggrin_255:

Well I'm not working right now so I'm interested. Either as conductor or other train jobs. Not sure if there is much in my area of southern Michigan.

Also to the guy who shuttled the train crew does that pay decently?
