The terrain in the areas east of Troutdale would make building a truckstop nearly impossible.

The land use laws would be the bigger obstacle. Property owners in Oregon have almost no rights to use their own land as they see fit.

the t/a is still there. i run out of portland. if you do not get there by 6:00, forget it. good luck. the flying j is no more. yes in the merger the flying j's that pilot did not want went to loves, so it is a loves. just like the one in fife,(aka tacoma) and corning. idle air is up and running again. very few locations this time. not at the ta though. look at there web site to find out where. anyway pilot or loves, they are both terrable.

It wasn't that Pilot didn't want them, it as the Department of Justice Antitrust Division that made them spin off siome locations to Loves to keep some more competition in fuel sales and pricing, that is according to news items and the company websites. The merger would have gone through more quickly but for the Feds trying to protect us from corporate gouging. Not all of the locations sold to Loves were Js, either, some were Pilots, like one of the two south of Indy and the Pilot at Binghampton, NY. These two are just examples, there are others.

The thing that gets me is that Pilot gave up locations where there was no J involved and kept others where you have two Pilots across the road from each other.

Loves usually beats the posted price of the other majors by a penny or more , but some other small chains and independents often beat them

One final note, if you like the Js restaurant and buffet even with limited hours, the J restaurant at exit 15 I80/94 E and exit 16 I94 W in Lake Station, IN is still there. Open 6AM till 11PM daily. They have a smoking section up front, too. I was on the road Christmas Day and stopped there for awhile before driving up to Chi.

They put in a new row of diesel pumps behind the store instead of going way around back. Lots of snow thereabouts so I didn't do lots of looking from the seat or on foot.
