Well as you know Doc, it is me that you are fussing about that recommended more research on your part. I still hold true to that recommendation. I apologized to you on your other thread for what you interpreted as my intent. Nana has so gracefully answered you also on both threads.
We would love to help you, but right now it is like trying to answer the question "what car should I buy"? The more that you can narrow down what you are looking at, the better. Many people on here read and research for months before they reach a decision.
If all you want to do is blast back at us each time we offer advice.... (cue the crickets in the background). And since it appears we have to point it out, that last sentence was humor.

Yes gone I know you were the one but this "more research" quote has been told to me by different peopl not just tonight. I just busted my ### makeing calls, look up sites, trying to get some true info from the sources themsleves I felt a little beaten after working on this list so hard. Us new people asking questions.. is doing research. I have also been asking people in pm's tell me something good and bad about the company you work for, rather than read the trash talk onthe boards. I been getting better acessments that way I think.

Research is important.
But, research takes many forms.
It can be asking the right questions directed to the right people, or it can simply be hanging in the background and reading.
I did some research, and now I am working for Swift.
Why?
I guess it is because I am a new driver that wishes to get into a decent company with my first try.
This board is the only, truly, helpful resource I have come across. Posters like Texas-Nana and Injun have helped, just have had the negative posters. They have helped me get an insight into both the good and bad of the company.
I just finished the orientation process and am waiting for a mentor. And what I have read here, compared to what was presented in orientation, matches. If you want to succeed in this business you have to take the initiative. You have to take what they give you, and ask for more. Then insist on more.
If you want more miles... you accept every load offered to you, whether it is 40 miles away or 2,000. You do it safely and on-time, with a smile.
The complainers of any company usually do something wrong - so wrong, that they get fired for it. Then they come in and say how bad the company is, rather than owning up to their own shortcomings.
The bad of the companies?
They don't put up with lazy a $ $ jerks.
The good of the companies?
They give to those that give their all.
That is my perspective, such as it is with me being a total newbee.
I may sing a different tune a year from now, since I just got into this business. But I am now a new Swift driver with expectations to do well, and I'll do my best to prove the naysayers wrong.wulfman75, Texas-Nana, sky king and 6 others Thank this. -
Since it seems you are now focusing on companies, I'll give you my ten cent story.
I attended C-1 training for USA Truck. Why did I pick pick USA?, because I saw all the companies as about the same but from everything I could find out about them at that time, they were great about getting you home at your requested time. And that was the most important thing to me, not the money, equipment, etc., but getting home when I wanted to be there. And you know something, I will give them an A- in that category. It was not unusual for them to tell me to head home, and home would be 250 miles away (deadhead). I was very pleased with that aspect. And they never my entire time there bothered or called me while on hometime.
In my time there, in which I completed the 12 month period for my loan being paid off, I found out their equipment was actually pretty decent and their pay for newbees was about the same as other companies.
I have no regrets about my choice starting with them. But there are many that have posted on this forum that had nightmares with them.
Does that help?xlsdraw, just lil me, ursus and 1 other person Thank this. -
Moose this is how I feel im gonna approach things. Show up, do what I can and see. I am a go getter kind of person. Always kinda been good at sales. Not shy at all. Willing to do everything I can in a safe manner. I cant help but feel I will be to strong on my safety stance and it will cost me a job or the favor of getting the miles. ?? I have been told that I hold the cards and if its not safe dont do it. so we shall see.
Thanks! -
I was posting some info for new people and just venting about being told do more, do more, do more. The post takes a minute to post acasue i has to be checked by a moderator for span it says..
I just didnt know where to start. Like I said when I found all these links and all this info on who does apprenticeships and who dont I got excited.
I appreciate the USA story.. they were not on my list.. one more to look at. Right now I have a list of schools that do an apprenticeship. SO I will read their sites jot down some questions and call on monday.
Under the post School vs contract
Now my problem is I was so scared to do the contract. After reading tonight maybe doing a contract or apprenticeship is not so bad. just pick the company thats right for me...
Any advice on questions I should be sure to ask?
Hometime? If I get home 1-2 times a month im ok. Right now I need miles and money. Im 34 with a fiance and a 2 boys. One 11 and one 9. I have no retirement of any kind. No savings. Just a struggling Mobile DJ service that the fiance will run shows giving her spending money while I send home checks. I need to start college funds and retirement plans and I feel im 10 years behind.
It will suck to be away from home but I have no degree or skill and need to start fresh. Trucking school is 4 weeks and I have always wanted to do it.
So I need a solid job with money more than home time. I tell my girl we work our ##### off now for a few years it wont be so bad later. -
Doc You are now arriving to where you should be in just a few short hours.
No doubt you are focused to be up this early in the a.m. still searching for answers. See, you have narrowed it down to money being more important than hometime. You might not know this, but that is a biggie.
Sleep well. About time for me to head home for my "nap". See you back tonight.xlsdraw Thanks this. -
Thanks gone. Money over home was a given to me. Its easy to forget you cant read the details in my mind.
Then again no one ever asked if I wanted moeny or home. LOL I got the idea to add that from reading another post Sleep well! -
life in of itself is cold, cruel and dirty. trucking can be taking first place for that award and the way companies, the government, and the general public treats us. we all need to "buck up" and accept things the way they are, because in all my years, i haven't seen any changes that i can say are for the good of the industry.
we will ALWAYS be the scumbags that drive on down the highways. this website does have a search feature. but yet, do you know how many freaking times questions like, "what company should i go to work for", or how difficult is it to drive a truck", or how much money does a trucker get", etc,etc.....there are dozens of posts ALL ASKING the same questions, when all one SHOULD DO FIRST is READ through ALL the titles as the answers CAN BE FOUND.......
you get irritated as you said in your thread, but DO YOU KNOW how irritating some questions are, knowing full well all one had to do was READ FIRST......??
why should WE have to continually answer the same questions over and over again....??
i belong to an automotive website as well, and by golly, the newbies that get BLASTED for posting questions that have already been asked before, and they DID NOT DO A SEARCH FIRST......
at least here, we treat newbies with a bit more respect than that.....!!!
this from you..."If you dont like it, DONT COME TO THE NEW TRUCKER SECTION for pete sake!"
let me respond to that......
"who are you to tell US NOT to go to the new trucker section"....???
you gave your 2¢
well i just gave my mine..........Last edited: Dec 4, 2010
just lil me Thanks this. -
you can ask questions all you want, but the same ones that have been asked dozens of times...??? there will always be BS to sift through....you cannot expect anyone here to drop what they are doing and cater to your questions specifically and not be satisfied with the outcome.
