My c15 engine was just inframed with a rebuilt cat head and new thermostats but will not build up enough heat. It runs about 170 degrees while driving and will only run about about while idling. I have a winter front and cardbord blocking 80% of the radiator. I at a loss why it wont run hotter. It has 190 thermostats in it and new seals. Please help. Also the motor is using about a gallon a week of oil since I had it over hauled. That was in the first of november. I think this guy screwed me!

The not geting hot would not bother me to much might just be a stuck thermostat but the using a gallon of oil a week..... I think you need to have a talk with the mechanic!

I have been back to him every week since he overhauled it! He supposedly replaced the tstats. Twice now, he told me that he used sleeves that were harder and it would take longer to seat the rings, im callin ######## on that!

It's a fact that some sets of rings tend to take longer to seat than others.

I forget which takes longest.....hard chrome rings a bell as hardest to get to seat......correct me if I'm wrong.

I had a Cummins N14 that used oil for about 3 PM cycles before it got completely "DRY" oil consumption wise.

He could of cracked an oiler ring putting it in. I seen it done before.

If he changed the Tstat, he might be having a hard time and has it ####ed a little or old gasket material left on. It doesn't neccessarily have to be stuck.

Chrome rings do take a long time to set Big Red. I'm sure it's just an OEM kit rebuild.

To test it you need an infrared temp gun they are cheap. with the engine cold, start it up put it to 1200 RPM, and test the tempature at the oil cooler, that gives you engine tempature, top rad pipe, will tell you if the thermostat seals are leaking, there should be no coolant flow until the thermostats open. Also you have to check the bottom rad pipe, that checks if the vent hose is putting threw so much coolant it is stopping the engine from coming to tempature. If you have a top to bottom flow radiator, with the surge tank on top it could be venting to the core threw there also.
Test what temp the thermostats open when the top rad pipe gets hot, and when the fan comes on the fan must be off at least 10 degrees before the thermostats opening temp is.

My fresh 3406E used one gallon the first 5000 miles... then three quarts the next 5000 miles and now, at 17000 miles, nothing....
