my cat wont heat up

My new ISX used 1 gallon it's first three months and then it started getting better.

 

What year? 6NZs had an overcooling problem.

 

Sounds pretty much like what my '02 does. Cat had a TSB on it, they drop a ball bearing into the engine that acts as a check valve that will get your temps up at idle but mine has always ran cooler than I thought it should.

How's your oil temp doing during the winter? I have to put a bellytarp on mine to keep good oil temperature.

Had a 5EK rebuilt at 706K because of #6 liner problem. Dump more oil in now than before rebuild.... Rebuild has about 100K on it. Rebuild was done by local KW dealer
Also, motor doesnt stay warm as good as before. Other truck has 2WS. Changed tstats while replacing water pump as preventive measure. Wish i hadnt changed them...truck doesnt warm up as fast and doesnt stay as warm.... Are Tstats junk now or what is causing problem? Havent played with infrared gun as John suggests, so somewhat my fault there...

 

There is also a chance the sensor is bad. When you have a sensor that is constantly immersed in coolant for literally years and then for a few days during the rebuilt it is subjected to the air and the tip will corrode. If your oil temps are cooler too then I would say your engine does have a temp problem. If the oil temps are normal then try a coolant temp sensor.

 

TSB is a service bulletin that Cat issued. If you follow the small coolant line from the coolant reservoir to the right front side of the engine just above the t'stats, they removed the line there and dropped a ball bearing in that opening to act as a check valve at idle.... my Cat dealer found this on their computer and did this.

I get the 9 ft belly tarp it goes from my radiator to the middle of my tranny, you hook it on with bungee straps.

When I found the bleed line having to much flow, I removed the fitting and filled it with brass and drilled it out to 1/16. You need a water filter or the fitting will plug.
The use of a belly tarp is a great thing, it keeps the oil tempature up which is important, also we use to put it at least to the middle of the transmission keeping that warm. I worked in Edmonton and we made the tarps from below the radiator, attached behind the bumper. and as tight to the frame as posible to keep the air flow, as restricted as posible. You can make it up, and cut it out then remove it and get it strengthened and eyelets installed places you need them. Having a rope stitched into the outer edge works to keep it from flapping. Canvass is what we used, and you can reinforce areas where the oil pan and rear housing rubs. You want to be able to remove one side easily to do the servicing.

 

I can't find it now but Cat put out a notice sometime back saying they had changed their regulators(thermostats), the notice told the parts guys to sell the old ones before selling the new ones.The new ones don't function near as good from what I've read and heard, someone mentioned trying to match it up with a "stat" or other brand from N.A.P.A. might be worth a try. I bought a couple extras back when I heard this. Good luck.
