Well the better relationship you have with the equipment operators the better you'll be treated. Typically they should set you up a "pad" to dump on which for the most part should be level, but these guys like to do it differently and I just basically dump where I can with the least amount of risk. I'm only legal with 78,000 with that set up, notice the 3rd axle on the trailer, that's what allows me to haul a little more. Without that drop axle my legal weight is 73,280 and since we get paid by the ton it was worth the investment to put that on our trailer. I only pull that trailer 50% of the time, I haul trash in a 53ft van as well, when the wife gets back home from Pennsylvania I'll have her come out and take some photos so you can see what that looks like, nothing too special but we did just take delivery of 7 brand new "east" trailers so I'll try and hook up to one of them so the whole combo is nice and shiny. Thanks for the interest, what we do is definately off the beaten path and something different from what most are used to. BTW, Bulldogfan taxied me down to the wood mill this morning to see how that whole operation works, pretty interesting and unlike most taxi drivers, he didn't scare the hell out of me, pretty good driver in my book.

Pretty good? All I get is pretty good? We didn't roll the truck over, fall off the tipper, blow anything up, or even have a confontation with the scale nazi! Also what I meant by "be nice to the bulldozer operator" was that I know from exp. that on most occasions you will be pulled up the hill, and back down the muddy nasty hill by the bulldozer operator. Had a good time today. Trashtrucker 1265 was at first a real help to me with all my questions, but fortunately for me is now also a good friend.

It's good to see you guys are having some fun at work.

TT,when you said you're nervous about pulling your dump on your new run do you mean climbing and possibly having to back down down the hill, or dumping your trailer, or both?

If you don't spin out going up the hill,do you normally back down when you're empty?

It seems some places you guys go to you use tippers and some places you use your hydraulic dump?

I used to haul old tires to an electric powerplant and emptied my van trailer with a tipper,it was fun watching all those tires rolling out and bouncing around inside the large holding area.

The dumping is nerve wracking, the ground is very unlevel and the material I haul is very sticky so it doesn't like to come all the way out until you've got your bed completely up. If you pay attention and take it slow it all works out well but there have been times where I've had to re-adjust 5 or so times just to find a somewhat level spot. I have spun out one time going up the hill loaded and had to back down in order to get another run, I wasn't too fond about that. Once we get dumped out though we go back down in the forward motion, when I haul trash we use a tipper to dump us, but depending on the weather that can be a pain as well. Thanks for taking a bit of interest in what I do, it's definately a side of trucking you don't see much. And BTW, I used to haul tires as well and dump them with a tipper, 53ft trailers sure hold a lot of tires especially when you've got a good lacing crew putting them in there.

Thanks for taking the time to post this thread and also for answering my questions.Trash hauling seems to be a recession-proof industry. And with the recycling craze I think less people are burning their trash.I live out in the sticks and I used to burn my trash, but now the county forces us to recycle.

I've seen some videos on YouTube of dumps tipping over and it looks like it takes a lot of skill to keep it upright.

On another note,I have seen some kind of bulk trailers on the road I not sure what they haul. They are enclosed boxes and the back of the trailer sits about 1 foot off the ground, and its single stationary axle sits about 2 feet from the back.

They must be something new,I've only noticed them for the last year or two,you guys know what I'm talking about?

Pretty sure what you're referring to is a tank of some sort that they use in construction type applications to act as pumps in some sort of capacity. I see them down around the coast a lot so maybe they're being used for dredging? I'm not sure, but I attached a pic of what I think you're talking about.

Thats pretty close to what I've seen, but without the belly, and when hooked to a tractor the back is even lower than that, and the floor is about a foot off the ground in the back and normal fifth wheel height in front. I'm thinking it's a dump or walking floor.Going down the road it almost looks like the tandems fell off a conventional van trailer because the roof is lower at the back also.

    I googled chip trailers and looked on Hank's Truck Pictures,but couldn't find any.I guess I'll try YouTube.Thanks,TT.

If that's what you see? Those haul drilling mud for oil wells.
