They hire grads, but you have to realize they don't send you out with a trainer.

Check out their threads in the DAC section. Tons of info

    Hey AT,

I cannot PM yet (?) but would be very interested in emailing you about W/S (I just realized you work for them). Would it be alright if I left my email address here and you could shoot me a email and I could send you a few questions or possibly you could suggest someone to talk to at W/S?

If your too busy I totally understand. I graduate driving school in about 2.5 weeks and wanted to get a few questions answered and I like what I hear about W/S on these boards and of course, respect your opinion as well.

My email is jharmstrong AT gmail DOT com

    Thanks in advance,

    John aka Mrktwiz:Trailer:

Yeah. W&S sound like a good company but I was interested in them because of their pet policy.

I have worked at the same company (warehouse distribution) for 10 yrs and I am loyal and like staying in one place. So if Swift gives me a shot, lets me earn my CDL through them, trains me, and is even half decent and fair I will stick with them and not look anywhere else. Plus they have a terminal in Houston so maybe I can get back home from time to time.

Pay doesnt seem that bad for newb pay.... 25cpm is more than swift( 21) and werner (22cpm) pays. Still havent heard from OP.. Im sure its a case where he went to orientation in conover NC and he was not smart enough or skilled enough to make it through the 10 day orientation. He probably didnt read the following from WS info packet.

"It is imperative the student understand that upon completing their orientation they will be assigned a truck and dispatched as a solo driver. They WILL NOT have a "driver trainer" with them in the truck. For that reason, it is important that the student does a reality check and personally assesses their emotional ability to handle things on their own. It is a fact that some student graduates SHOULD be with a driver trainer. However it should be stressed to those students that believe they have the ability to go out on their own after having completed the 10 day orientation, that Watkins and Shepard Trucking will have them prepared for over-the-road trucking such they can go out on their own and be Safe, Successful and Productive. "

Obviously the OP had no emotional stability...... hehe

When I looked into companies I found best pay and best company didn't usually come together, I went with what I thought would be the better company and believe I made the right choice...I really like the no trainer part too, it's cramped enough in here by myself, I can't even imagine being in here with someone else for weeks on end...I really don't see how people can do it that don't sleep together... :biggrin_2559:

And from what I read, many, not all, of the trainers out there aren't trainers because they're the most proficient or safety conscious, they just had the desire and I speculate that most do it for the money, not to pass on what they know...Some of course do it right, but I think they are the exception, not the rule...

one thing about the W/S pay scale is that they pay hub miles (well, off the truck odometer) and they pay for all miles, loaded or empty. if you compare pay for a complete trip you'll find that W/S is not that far off other carriers that trumpet "49 cpm OMGZ!!11!1!". what matters is how much you make per trip, not how many cents per mile.

their fuel/safety bonus was easily attainable if you do what they ask of you. they also pay weekly, their checks don't bounce, and they will cheerfully pay any reasonable expense that a driver incurs.

they were also paying $45 for full tarp/untarp on the flatbed side and this is more than double what i make for it now.

if W/S had a regional flatbed setup out of denver i'd go back to them two weeks ago.

    wulfman75 Thanks this.

They also pay for scaling so there's no excuse to get fined for being overweight...

i worked for several years preloading trailers at stone. both W/S and jim palmer lost 7 or 8 loads a day, every day, out of missoula when stone shut down (as did swift).

W/S flatbed side hauled lumber out of the NW to points east and made the big money hauling freight back to the NW (CAT machinery, agricultural machinery, etc). while i imagine the east to west freight is still mostly there, the lumber side is way down.

as for competition, there is jones brothers, sammons trucking company, and davis transport all within 5 miles of the W/S home terminal.

and yet, when i last talked to vince (head of operations now, woooo) some time ago, they were still making a (small) profit. go W/S :)
