    Hi all;
    I have a quick question about the kinds of meds for diabetes which would disqualify a driver.
    My wife has been a diabetic for about 2 years now. A few months ago, our family doctor put her on insulin injections. After starting our research on going into the trucking industry, she spoke with him and he has her on an inhaler (exubera) and off the needle.
    According to him, this will satisfy the requirements for her to drive. (He is certified to do DOT physicals and does mine every two years.)
    How will a history of being insulin dependant affect her chances of driving if she is not on injections now and can pass a DOT physical with no restrictions?
    Thanks in advance for any help.

    I would say 1st read Notarps links. If the doctor is DOT certified doctor then I am sure he knows the facts about it (I would only hope, but do read the links?). I know they changed the regulations to be a little more leniant I do believe.
    Watch the wife though. My mom is a diabetic which she is on insulin. She had a diabetic attack and was driving her car and crashed into the orange barrells and had a swat team of police following her and pulling guns out on her thinking she was running from the cops and driving while under the influence. Guess what she touches no drugs or alcohol in I don't know how many years :biggrin_2559:

    Funny looking back, but thank god she did not have my child with her at the time. Be carefull.

    Thanks for the info; I too had heard that the regs had been loosened a little bit, and with our (new) diet and excercise program our doctor hopes to have it under control with straight oral meds by the time we plan to head out to school (end of summer). I guess my main concern is that since diabetes is a lifelong health issue, how would companies look at a history of having been on "the needle" in one's past.

    I would think the past is the past in this situation. It's what she is currently on that will matter. There might be a waiting period to adjust to med's; I am not sure though. It only makes sense if she is not on the "needle" now, they should not hold that against her.

    Be carefull:biggrin_255:
