Of course, this issue has absolutely nothing to do with legislation, government, or America... but you did try to turn it into some sort of political thing anyway! Did you read the article?

Let's get right down to the matter here. There are big bucks to be made tracking your browsing habits and it's done in a lot of ways.

Did you know an image you view in your browser may contain a web bug? It's a very small image that can be placed anywhere on the image or accompanying article, often undetectable to the human eye. The web bug contains a small script that can read your browsing history, stored passwords, log-ins, etc.

Laws are futile. Companies just set up shop offshore and take advantage of the medium for what it is ... The Worldwide Web.

Here is a very elementary FAQ page on Web Bugs ... VERY ELEMENTARY! All risks are not mentioned!

    http://w2.eff.org/Privacy/Marketing/web_bug.html

I highly recommend using Firefox with some of their fabulous add-ons:

Ghostery - Alerts you to trackers on the page you are viewing with the option to block tracking permanently.

Ad Block Plus - Blocks annoying ads on pages and there is a free subscription service to update your Ad Block Plus for new threats.

NoScript - Just what it says, blocks java scripts that may be hostile. This is probably the most common form of hostile attacks on your PC. There is a learning curve to using NoScript but it is worth every minute you put into using it. It's your wealth and security you are keeping from some unscrupulous jerk.

TACO - Targeted Advertising Cookie Opt-Out. Sets permanent opt-out cookies to stop behavioral advertising for 100+ different advertising networks, including Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, all members of the Network Advertising Initiative, and many other companies.

Getting back to the girlie sites, those gif images or jpegs can contain viruses, malicious code or trojan horses. Visit these sites with the knowledge that you are on a parallel with unprotected group sex. They are dangerous and I have made very good money removing viruses from peoples computers that frequent porn sites.

TOR won't block the content of what is being downloaded to your browser. Simple rule of computing, Garbage In Garbage Out. Those images are stored on your computer in cache. Also, there are laws pertaining to the concealment of identity .. but I am not a legal expert and will refrain from further comment on the issue.

Using the private browsing feature will delete the cookie trail of your browsing habits but won't keep the trash from hitting your operating environment.

If you ABSOLUTELY MUST visit risky sites there is a safer venue for you.

A client of mine confided that he liked the girlie sites and did not want to stop visiting them. I set him up with a cheap Pentium III laptop with Linux on it. That is the only thing he does with that laptop is look at the girls ... a dedicated peep show if you will. No personal info is stored on that PC.

There is a drawback to that feeling of security though. The server that presents those pics also tracks IP addresses and MAC's (media access control address). Each net card has a unique MAC that identifies you on a network. (If you are connected to a site you are on their network!)

So, are you really anonymous? No.
Can you be? Yes, but the average user is not skilled or savvy enough to know how to be.
Is it worth it? That is entirely up to the individual.

I believe strongly in the First Amendment and have assured my clients in the past that the content of their PC was absolutely confidential ... with a stern warning that children in their pursuits would not be tolerated.
