some of the companies will and some wont. I brought my own inverter for other uses but a use it mainly to power my cpap machine. I got it from walmart for about 40 bucks it 300 watts and it does the job just fine.As far as companies hiring you because of sleep apnea at prime where I am currently training they will hire you even if your bmi is above 38.I require you to take a sleep test($125.00 for the night if you dont have sleep apnea) but if you do have it then they will hook you up with a cpap machine that has a downloadable chip in which you can send in your info from the road.I know all of this cause I have sleep apnea and I too was very skeptical about at first but now I look forward to using my machine at night cause I know I will get a good nights sleep.

the DOT Dr. said I needed a sleep apnea test, my famiy Dr. told me to take a benadryl 40 minutes before bedtime. I take a benadryl every night, I sleep just fine. When someone tells you to take a sleep apnea test, if your in doubt, consult your family Dr., sometimes allergies can mimic sleep apnea and be solved with a drowsy allergy pill to help you breathe normal and sleep at night

CSA is ONLY going to report on you. It's not enforcing BMI or sleep apnea or your sexual habits! It enforces nothing just reports on you and your mistakes! Insurance companies are the culprits on BMI and sleep apnea for now but don't worry, they will sick (?) their BFI lobbyists on DOT and get it put in their purview. Count on it! Insurance companies are going to rule trucking to the point that it won't be worth it to even own your own as you could not afford the costs!
All it's going to do is record your screwup! And basically that's what they are. Your screwups because that's why you got a ticket or a writeup!
If your logbook is not up to date as in LAST CHANGE OF DUTY STATUS and you get written up for it,
OR
you get a OOS,
OR
any writeup at a DOT inspection or speeding tickets.
That's ALL CSA will be doing is tabulating these tickets and doing exactly what HireRigt better known as DAC does.
They will also be putting these numbers onto your companies file also and when the numbers start to get high then DOT will be looking at you and the company harder and if you the driver can't follow the FMCSA then you'll pretty much be out of trucking and doing whatever you can do besides driving a truck!
Companies that have drivers to stupid to do a good PTI, keep their log books in order or the company is so freaking stupid as to make a driver drive a truck in need of a FMCSA covered repair and the truck is stopped and put OOS both the driver and the company will acquire more points!
All of you need to stop looking at CSA as your enemy! It's actually going to make the BFI you drive for think before sending you a load and you have 2 hours left out of 70 and expect you to falsify the book! It will make these cheap arsed companies that think driving a truck with an inoperable brake system or something 1000's of miles to get it to their shop think twice on that gamble that you won't get stopped.
This is a TOOL, YOU THE DRIVER can use against these bottom feeders to your advantage! YOU do NOT want any points on that CDL or CSA Report so you have the choice of telling BFI to stuff it and get you in for repairs or you need to take 10 off to gain some hours
( NOTE!!: DOT is going to rewrite the 34 hour reset or attempt to shelf it due to pressure for your friendly Teamsters, ATA, and CRASH and other alphabet lobbyists! That reset is wonderful as you go home for 34 you RESET and not just add those 2 days worth of hours coming back! ZEROS from 1-7 days ago can haunt your arse to no end! It's helping you to actually make better money with 11 hours of driving and actually getting some GOOD sleep time and not some 8 total hours off duty and BFI forcing you to keep that stupid rule! But to sleep, eat, shower and whatever you need to do on line 1!!)
CSA if your friend! It really is IF you would look it up and read AND understand what it's actually going to do!
It's just a reporting agency and it does NOT have rules or mandates except to take every ticket you get and total them up to see if you need to be driving a truck because you're not smart enough to follow the rules and get caught and ticketed for it!
Note that if you don't get caught on the road with a funny book but DOT comes in for an audit and they catch you being creative either on your own or because you let a moron dispatcher or company owner dictate how you'll log you get to pay the fines which at one time only the companies paid and you both get the points!
Both company and driver are now going to be held accountable for your actions. The best advice you as a driver can follow is to follow FMCSA and screw that person at a desk sending you QComm or phone messages! YOU are behind the wheel not then!
Besides, This CSA will pretty much kill that BFI called HireRight/DAC because if your BFI says you were fired for say tickets or falsifying logs or things of that nature and CSA says you have zero points who do you think your next company is going to believe? A stupid credit report company that they know BFI's can pretty much burn drivers on a stake or the CSA report where you have zero points which they get?
Me? I'd hire you with the CSA FREE report and screw that BFI DAC pay for crapola report and take your good CSA!
It's now up to us the drivers as to how you'll run. Shippers and receivers will have to rethink how they work as it's their load they want and if they sit you in a dock all day and these idiots know you have to work inside of a time table they'll change as they will finally get it figured out that you are in no way going to screw up your CSA scores for them! You just have to stand firm on this as I said This will work to your advantage if you use it as the tool it'll become! -
lilrobbi, make sure you use an inverter with a modified sinewave or you'll cut the motor life way short on that CPAP and it voids warranty. Get a good one like a Cobra.

Its a natural product called **snake oil**....it does not get you off the CPAP permanently as if you get off of the product you will have to go back to the CPAP. However, if you take it daily, you will not have to go on the CPAP when you go to bed...

Personally (and don't take it as such), it sounds like the flavor of the week, much as Colon Cleansers were the past two years. Now you seldom hear about them any more.
And as far as "getting truckers past their sleep test"....makes it sound very similar to "faking out the drug test". If a driver really DOES have OSA, I don't want them "getting past the test". I want them treated with proven, effective methods. Yes, I'm sure there are some medical advancements on the horizon (and I have faith that there are for everything, being the son of a doctor), but I don't generally hear about them on a trucker's message board.Last edited by a moderator: Dec 14, 2010
