maybe you should look into getting a slingbox at home..that way you can get your tv on your laptop wherever you are in the country..they are about $125 bucks and thats it..
wulfman75 Thanks this. -
Thought about that but I'll be living in the truck so there won't be any at home.

I'm glad to hear this from the Truckload side.. I'm not being sarcastic in any way and really mean I'm happy to hear that's how they operate.. I'm surprised to hear this about a Con-way company but glad.
We just received a memo here at Freight last week stating we could refuse to drive in unsafe constitutions and even refuse to report to work in the event of severe winter conditions. I was really surprised to see this. The memo also stated that if it becomes a regular thing - we call them "snow-birds", you'll be trained by a senior driver on winter driving which I have no problem with. It's our job and I expect my co-workers to run when it's reasonable to do so.
The general unwritten rule/policy at Freight was pretty much to run till the roads were closed and we did unless a judgment call was made by the driver to shut it down. Only once in 7.5 years have I done so and that was on glare ice so I pulled off and informed dispatch I was turning around and heading back.
My attitude about severe winter driving is simple. I'll report to work and drive all night in heavy snow till the road is closed as I've done many times before unless state authorities don't want us on the road - when it gets to that point Freight normally shuts the region down. The only time I will use this policy is during a major ice event. I'll go in the snow but forget the heavy ice - I'm done.. Your bf made the 100% correct decision to shut down on ice..
Whether you're on the Truckload or Freight side, lets be glad we have the policy now but don't abuse it. It's our job to get through some rough conditions and you can't call it quits every time it snows. Keep it to the most severe icy conditions like he did and I'm sure the policy will stay in place...
I'm glad your bf shut down on the ice and the company was cool with it.. Has not always been that way at CNWY but seems like they're starting to get it after 27 years right.. -
Coming out of Tulsa the other day got into the storm outside St.Louis. When I got into Illinois there was 4-6 trucks flipped or off the road. I stopped in Effingham and had lunch. Watched the snow fall harder and harder. I had to be 220mi up the road by 11pm the next night. I sent a mesage to Swift I was shutting down. They said "thanks."
I left 5am the next day and saw 21 trucks flipped, crashed, jack knifed etc all over the place. Most were owner Op's are from smaller companies. Only big company truck I saw was Messilla Valley.
This is my first winter.scottied67 Thanks this. -
Very cool post, nice to know that your company is safe.
I asked my trainer about this issue and would I need chains..He laughed at me and said if the weather is bad we shut down no questions asked..
Have a great x-mas with the bf and fam. -
That was one of the things I liked about Con-way. It is your call. If you don't feel it is safe shut it down and communicate. Communication is stressed with them.
wulfman75 Thanks this. -
Good to know that they care more about safety, been with companies that wanted me to drive thru closed roads if posible!!
How long does Conway expect/require you to be out before home??? What do they govern at on the freight side if you don't mind me asking. -
With Con-Way Truckload you have to stay out like a week or 10 days (can't remember which) before you can highlight for home. Then they have 7 days to get you there.
Not sure what the freight guys are governed at but the govern is 65 for the Truckload trucks. -
I gave $299 for mine # Best Buy on-line. I use mine both on the truck and motor home. I just set mine on the hood or roof when I want to use it.wulfman75 Thanks this.
