I was driving down a gravel road with a 5 year old IH and the FM radio came on full volume and the engine died and would not restart.....

    Why would it not start?

Another time I killed the motor on another truck starting out in the high box and did not know it was still in the high range....clutched in and it started right up....souds like he did not kill the motor, as if he did, he could have restarted....if the motor just up and died, it would likely not restart.

Anyone want to guess what was wrong with my IH....

One more clue...it was an electrical problem and another driver fixed it in about half a minute, so that it restarted.

sounds like he tried to beat the train but did not and panicked, jumped and said his truck stalled.

Well I looked it up, (assuming the addy is right 57th AVE) and I've been there.
It's actually a pretty busy truck hub in Queens, but the tracks that line the area are in such poor condition you might mistake them for abandoned. Now 57th Ave runs parrallel to the tracks I'm assuming the train was on, so it might have been 49th street onto 56th road. (what fun this neighborhood is) The "main" road has stop signs and the 2ndary has the right of way, but you have to cross the tracks first.

    Here's my guess:

1.) Driver stops clear of the tracks, can barely see the intersection. 4 wheelers Jersey roll the stop signs, oblivious to the rig.
2.) Truck rolls onto tracks, stops at intersection, looks both ways. 4 wheelers continue to blow the stop sign.
3.) Bells start ringing, driver looks up and sees light of oncomming train.
4.) Pops the clutch, panics stalls the motor.
    5.) ABANDON SHIP!!!
    6.) boom.

Must have been a fun afternoon at Mapeth Creek
