Its not just you for sure. I think our stories are like step children compared to what some of the real company owner's veterans out there. Those not believing these drivers exist are either one of those type of drivers or simply never had the disadvantage to mange a trucking operation.

Probably doesn`t say much for my judgement but I actually knew most of the guys before they worked for me.All I know for sure is I will never try that again.

My employer paid the motel bills and had contracts with certain places. The company motel in Louisville had an outdoor swimming pool. One big driver was drinking, and diving from the motel balcony. I suppose motel management called the police. It took seven officers to place that driver in a squad car.

Drinking and guns don't mix. Also in Louisville, another driver arrives at the terminal from the above motel. He is waving his pistol around the office and joking about shooting the waste basket. Everyone encourages the driver to put away his pistol and hit the road. Sending a drunk onto the highway seemed safer than trying to take away his gun.

We had a choice of two hotels in downtown St. Louis. The drinking drivers usually stayed at the same hotel although the other one served booze from a cart at the swimming pool located on top of the adjacent parking ramp. One driver had a pattern. He pulled a high paying percentage load from Grand Rapids to St. Louis on Sunday night. During the week, he passed any load offered and went back to the hotel bar. Of course, by Friday night he was at the top of the board and he selected a high paying load back to Grand Rapids. Other drivers were pulling five loads per week with a couple of cheap loads in the mix. His truck owner asked why he was consistently at the bottom of the weekly revenue list. His reply: "Somebody has to be at the bottom."

I was a trailer mechanic's helper at a small family-owned trucking company in the late 1950s. The story was told of the night the company owner accepted a collect phone call from one of his drivers who must have been "pilled up". The driver said, "I'm out of gas". The owner replied, "Stay right there and I will bring you some gas in a coke bottle on my bicycle!"

I have seen more than a few bad drivers really stick it to some small mom and pop outfits in the past. Theft in every form you can imagine.

I worked for a small outfit last year, 8 trucks - 4 were O/O, 4 were company. The guy hired an older guy who had come highly recommended. Me, the owner, this guy and my wife were standing around one Friday afternoon when the subject of injuries came up. The co owner, fairly young guy, had back surgery a few years back. Gary, his new hire, explained that he had a trashed back but was just going to work until it gave out, then start a workers comp claim.

I guess he didn't realize that his employer (in the group) would be on the hook for that whole scenario. He was asked to clean out his truck.
