I'm from MD, and there, they print off your hard copy license right there, and give it to you right now.
I'm going to cdl school here in TX, and here they give everyone a piece of paper for a license, while you wait for a real one in the mail.
And every time you change anything on your license, you basically don't have a license for 3 weeks, because you just have something they printed off the internet.
Do most states operate this way? Because that is just weird to me. cops in MD don't want people giving them a piece of paper for a license.
I bet MD will let me transfer my paper cdl to a real MD hard copy. They say i will have to wait for my hard copy TX CDL to get my MD hard copy.
Does your state not give out hard liscenses at the dmv?

No here in Wisconsin they even give you a real card even for your permit. I have heard about this from some friends....I think NY does that too.

Bowman, not all states are as smart as others. Some are behind the times a little. Here, in WI. we get our hard copy the same day, but over the border in MN they too have to wait.
Wisconsin, recently changed though. That current drivers in the system will get their hard copies same day.
But, new drivers to the system, either through just getting their license (16+ years old) or new entrants to the WI system form out of state. Will have to wait for a couple weeks to get the hard copy.
It doesn't make any sense to me but much of what our government does today makes little sense either. -
Here, we are on the "new" system, where the whole thing goes into the Facial Recognition Database, so you get a Paper license, on special paper with your picture printed on it, and you get to wait for the real one, until after they've added your mug to the database. Many states have refused to take part in this practice, but apparently ours thought it was no big deal.
When my son turned 21, he had just moved home, so his bank account and all his mail was still addressed to his old address. So it took all day long just to get to the picture taking process, because he had to prove that he lived with us. He moved home to go to college and better himself, and the dang DMV acted like he was some kind of a criminal for this. Needless to say, I made a call to the state DMV office and let them know that their new process to get a license was less than stellar. But I'm sure that they just let it go in one ear and out the other.

in TX they said they don't give out hard copies because they want to run your application thru some more scrutiny before they give you the real one.
I think they just don't want to spend the money to put the equipment in every office. -
Heck the BMV knows more about me than Santa does.
Same thing here, I get a paper copy and wait for my real one to come in the mail. -
TN gives a hard copy. One strange thing they do is senior citizens with a class D can renew online or in the mail and they don''t put a picture on the license.
-
GA gives a paper one and you have to wait for the hard copy in the mail. When I first moved here they gave you a temp hard copy that was good for 90 days before you got the "real" hard copy lol. Now it's the paper and a couple of weeks you get the hard one. That's for the reg license. I bet the CDL will probably be the same.
Ga allows anyone to renew their license online. I think they just use the same pic lol -
Strange? I'd say that's a blessing! Who wants to be forever reminded of being old?

They could take this practice a step further by allowing old-timers to submit photos from their youth..., when they were HOT...

they give a paper one then wait for the hard copy here in nc too
