Well, I'll speak from my HUGE oil consumption issue and you can go from there. I have a 500 Detroit (DDEC4) that started burning oil by the gallons. It started using around 2 gallons a week and then it increased to around 6 gallons every other day. Within a week I had added over 10 gallons of oil to the thing. Now, everybody had their own opinion about what the problem was but what alarmed me was the amount of 'white' smoke that I saw coming from the exhaust after about 10 minutes idle time. It still pulled like a mule and fuel consumption wasn't bad. I finally took it in (Detroit Diesel in Baton Rouge, Louisiana) because I didn't want to lock it up. They ran a 'Base' pressure test with a pedometer and found that I had EXCESSIVE blowby. After a tear down they found that cylinders 2 & 3 were the culprit and it seems as though the previous owner DID NOT take care of the engine. The cylinders were worn as if the engine ingested a lot of sand which wore the cylinders to the point that compression was bad and oil was seeping past the rings in the combustion chamber. Now, I thought of everything that could have been wrong but that one simple test proved the problem and $12,000 fixed it!
Burning oil increasing a lot
