I was expecting my 1st year to be in the neighborhood 32K or so ... but to be on pace to make 26k just was not worth it.

I put out a few apps and have a number of offers ... thankfully all well over the lousy 26 cpm Werner pays.

your time in training doesn't count as being a driver your still a student at that point not a driver. My 1st year with werner I am on track to gross 40k. And now still with them I am on track to gross 6 figures next year based on my last 2 months pay checks. Keep the left door shot and stay moving. Dont complain to dispatch. Make them your friend and send them presents and you will be ballin out of control like me.

If you are a truck driver and not driving then you are not working. If you are eating, taking a shower, in the toilet or sleeping or in the bunk, you are not working. You are off duty. Being away from home is NOT working. This really shows the lack of work ethic of the union mentality. No wonder you can't attract more than 7% of the work force. This is the reason so many union companies have moved out of the country. Most people have a good work ethic and don't expect to be paid for sitting on their hands, going to the toilet, showering or eating. You probably want to also be paid for taking your dog for a walk.

You expect to be paid for every minute that you are out of town? Truck drivers are paid to drive. Just because you are out of town and not driving doesn't mean that the company should pay you. If you are asked to help unload a truck then you should be paid for that task. Most carriers will pay you detention if it takes more than 2 hours to unload or load your truck, providing you are on time for an appointment. I don't think that drivers should be loading or unloading trucks, but some carriers or shippers will ask a driver to assist in unloading. They do pay extra for that task. Just because a driver is not home is not a reason for the carrier to pay them. Next they will want to be paid for breathing, just because they are out of town.

You are not going to make top wages your first year in this business. How many jobs can you start at over $500/week with no education or work experience? The way things work in this business, we can have a big paycheck one week and a smaller one the next. Other times it can be more predictable. It can depend on when we get our load delivered and paperwork in to the office. There are also times of the year when we do better than other times. I think that every segment of this business has certain times where they are not as busy as other times of the year. I have met a number of drivers who have worked for Werner for several years and most of them seem to do pretty well. If you have 6 months to a year of experience, a good work history and mvr, you should be able to find something that pays more than the rate you started at with Werner. Keep in mind that you will usually lose 1-2 weeks pay with any job change. That will lower your pay for the year. I have known of some who will change jobs for a penny a mile. It will take at least several months for them to get back the lost income. Most don't think that far ahead. Before you make a change, you may want to take a look at the way you have been working and see if there is room for improvement. You may also talk with your dispatcher and see if there is any way you can earn more money or improve how you are working. Most people will earn between $28-32,000 their first year in this business.

I hear that union drivers even get to use the bathroom at loading docks! Just imagine, Not having to find a bush all the time!

Most company drivers? I doubt that. With the shorter runs and E-logs most drivers will gross maybe $40,000, and thats after a few years of experience.

I was on E-logs 80 percent of 2009 and made $47k. This year 100 percent and I am over $55k with two weeks to go.
