This truck stop is ok-pretty clean, etc BUT DO NOT GO to the restaurant inside it.It claims homemade this and that & when I complained-was told "oh it comes that way" but on the menu it says freshly made in our kitchen. There are plenty of places to eat within walking distance-ended up at Applebys with a really good meal.

Hate to ruin it for ya, but Appleby's meals come from a package too. Worked there once for about two weeks. Then I remembered why I hate the restaurant biz.:biggrin_25521:

thats fine but at least my food was good and hot.
At the Refuge I ordered a belgian waffle-you know the great big as your plate kind.as advertised on menu as their own batter freshly grilled with butter.I got 3 little 3 inch square toaster waffles with margarine and ice cold. That was not at all what was advertised.

Try Maggies cafe, I-70 exit 175 in MO. Right next to micky d's, plenty of truck parking, great food.

Cowboy's north of Atlanta was pretty good, but the last time I was there was about 5 years ago.

A toaster waffle? Really? :biggrin_25521:That's pathetic! I'd have been ticked off to the max. If I order a belgian waffle, it better be an actual belgian waffle. Those things rock!

sadly, the current trend of food service is premade product. when i started as an apprentice (way back) i learned to cook everything from scratch, and we went with a formula of basic ingredients costing less, labor costing x to equall y. now the formulla that most restaurants use is to buy premade crap, use less labor, and make better profit as labor is now more expensive. and most managers feel since everybody is using the same crap that it wont matter. they cant go get anything better at another restaurant because they all use the same stuff. the thing to remember is the health dept. checks all restaurants for sanitation, food temps, safe handleing practices, ect. they want to make sure no one gets sick, they don't care if it taste's good as long as it don't kill ya.

It was said once here, on another thread, to look for the locals in any truck stop restaurant you go to. If the local people do not go to eat there, eat carefully.

It goes the other way too. People look for truck stops thinking they have good food. Alot of farmers will hang out at a truck stop regardless of their food. They just like being around truck drivers.
