In our area there are wrecking yards that will give you a warranty with a used transmissions. You want a warranty to cover jumping out of gear on acceleration and or deceleration.
They take them apart and replace worn parts, and seals.
You really want to look around and find the prices on an exchange and if you have it out get a quote on getting yours rebuilt with a warranty.
I am not a fan of buying a transmission or any piece that is not inspected it can cost you a lot more in the long run than new. Just a thought! -
Most wrecking yards will not take apart a transmission and replace worn parts or seals. All they do is just scrap the truck and take the reusable parts out, like the trans. A rebuilt shop will take apart, inspect and rebuilt components as needed. Some wrecking yards may rebuild parts too I guess. Ultimately in the end it is buyer-beware! I wouldn't buy a trans used/rebuilt without some kind of warranty or something.

sometimes relatevilly not old trucks are wreked. yesterday my client got '08 i-shift from rolled over truck. transmission is in exelent condition

if the will let you, pull top cover and look at sliding clutches for wear. also while top cover is off take a pry bar and pry forward on syconizer clutch. it should have a 1/8 inch or more between clutch face and aux drive gear. check oil for metal. pull bell housing and check for metal coming out of front bearings. like i said if they will let you. but other then that you really don't know what your getting buying used. even a 2008 thats wrecked could have been abused. saving $1000 and having the trans fail 2 months later, won't save you any money. 3 days of downtime and the repair bill will be well over $1000. a rebuilt trans with a warranty is the way to go. even aftermarket that has a good warranty would be 10 times better then a used one with no warranty and 400,000 miles on it.

yeah, to check eaton tranny this way is easy, but if it is Mercedes ore ZF 16 st. transmission - you cant see.. to inspect this type of transmission you need to unscrew bellhousing...

anyone know where to buy an affordable reman eaton 10 speed

It can be a crap shoot. That's why I started building my own spares so when one went out, I wouldn't be in a bind.
If you find a used one I wouldn't buy it without pulling the top and inspecting the gears. The gear teeth should all look new. The sliding clutches (there are three of these) can show some wear and be ok. The rear two sliding clutches should look the same. Direct/over drive clutch (the first sliding clutch) will look different and may appear worn, but it is made a little different.
If the inside looks clean, no metal in gear oil or on the magnets it should be ok.
Most fuller transmissions will run many miles. I have one with well over a million miles and have never touched it.
What is wrong with your trans? -
I'd like to help, I have both metric and RTO that I have built for my own trucks, not sure of the rules in this forum for selling stuff
