I live in Springfield MO but I leave my truck at the KC yard when I'm on hometime. We have plenty of freight running to/through KC so you shouldn't have any issues getting home when you need to be.
I'll be coming out of the house Jan 3 after a 10-day break and will probably be up in Omaha sometime next week; if so I'll drop in and say hi.
Good luck,
Jim -
The base mileage pay is 90 cents, with additional pay for short mile runs. There is an additional 4 CPM in bonus pay for safety / logs (2 CPM), productivity (1 CPM) and longevity (1 CPM, plus an extra .5 CPM every year you drive for HB as company or o/o). The full DOE FSC is paid on all dispatched miles, loaded or empty.
Lease payments vary depending on the equipment and whether it is new when you get it or used (always your choice; you'll never be forced to lease a truck that you don't want). You're welcome to purchase or lease elsewhere and bring your truck on.
HB has a slightly dated lease-purchase info page here. There are some new International ProStars in the mix and I believe all the Volvos are used. Note that, unlike most lease programs, you must work at HB as a company driver for at least 60-90 days to even qualify for the program and if you're a complete knucklehead they won't let you lease at all.
I keep an online spreadsheet with all of my settlement information for the past 2.5 years that you're welcome to scrutinize.
Good luck,
JimPoobah Thanks this. -
Thanks for everything. Looking forward to meeting everyone in Omaha and I'll see ya when you get there. I put you down for referral. I'll check with them to make sure you get credit because it was your good words about the company that helped me with this decission. Thanks again.

Is it just me, or does the pay scale seem lacking?
They show starting pay at 32 cents per mile. It would seem hard to get experienced drivers, when one is paying a wage less than what I earned 15 years ago. -
The reality is that drivers usually get 4 CPM extra for things like safety, productivity and longevity with the company. On the down side, the company has forced per diem and the medical insurance isn't that hot, though an improvement from the company that I worked for before switching over (not that this matters much to me since I've been leased on since June of 2008 ).
I will say this though: on a quarter-by-quarter basis my miles have been consistent and I've rarely felt like I could not drive more if I wasn't such a lazy bum. HB is well established and since we pull a lot of reefer freight, well, people gotta eat and all.
YMMV, if you got better elsewhere go for it.

I haul food, too. People aren't going to reduce their eating habits, so we've got job security.
Well, we all know how payscales go. Some have higher base pay, but, get no miles, treat you like crap, have unobtainable bonuses, or whatever. The LP program looks intriguing.
IDK. I'm shopping around. Just not sure for my situation. I want a good "fit" for, both, myself and my next company. -
#### straight.
You sound like you have your head screwed on straight and you do your homework so you should be fine wherever you end up. My quarterly miles with HB since I've leased have been:
Year 1: 33,898 | 33,355 | 31,402 | 34,648
Year 2: 29,917 | 31,025 | 29,677 | 32,285
Year 3: 30,758 | 29,267
As you can see, I've ranged from 29,267 to 34,648 per quarter and average about 31,000, and I'm fairly lazy and nowhere near the hard charger I was as a company driver (not to mention I purchased a new house about 18 months ago and take a 3-day weekend there every other week generally).
As far as bonuses go, the only one I don't always get is the 1 CPM "performance" bonus which I think you get for 30,500 dispatched miles in a quarter (not sure actually). The work environment is second-generation family-owned so you'll be a "new driver" for a while but eventually they will get to know you by name.
Good luck,
Jim -
Hill is definitely high on my list.
I'd really like to try running a truck on my own, without the feeling of helplessness that being a true O/O would have. I want to be rewarded for my diligence in watching everything I do. Company drivers without bonus opportunities, like me, don't get anything for that effort. The LP program allows that. Furthermore, I know how I like to keep things.
Anything worth doing is worth doing right! -
Thanks again for everything
I'm in orientation now. I made sure you got the referral. I very impressed by what I'm seeing and hearing. Very good company to work for. I will continually update my progress through the system.
We started Monday with the morning session a lot of followup to the paperwork you filled out just to make sure you got it all right. Some get it right some don't I'm one of those hard cases so they had to work with me a little not much. They are a bunch of real nice people here. They really want you to qualify and they do everthing they can to help you. Rita takes care of all the apps and is still up-datinig. Lunch was Jimmy Johns. Gloria is the safety person she sent us all over to the Docs and we all had fun playin with the pencils and filling out the forms. All in all a good day if you like doctors offices. The people at the doctors office were amazed with us seven truck drivers. We were cuttin up and generally having a whoopin good time. Needless to say we were not their normal patients. They thought we belonged in the looney bin. Gotta get back to work I will pick-up later this evening.
