I quit a year and half ago. I could breath better. I dont feel holyer than tho about it.
I got a little depressed. It was like losing my best friend. You quitters know what I am talking about. Determination is the only thing that will make you quit. The gum only helped me from injuring others.

Funny Roadmedic and I were able to find links. I'm sure you could have as well with minimum effort. I did not say if you smoke you are going to get diabetes I quoted reputable sources that say it increases your chances of getting it by three times. Do a little research and you will also find studies on smoking and raising blood sugar levels in diabetics who are trying to control their blood sugar levels.

Not sure what you mean by "predisposed". Are you talking about family history? Family history does raise your chances as does your race. By your example of a family history of diabetes and you don't have it shows it is only one contributing factor. Lifestyle is more of a determining factor. In the example of your sister do you mean when she got diabetes or when she was diagnosed? She could have had it for years before diagnosis. If you knew this before she was diagnosed how did you know this and did you tell her?

Just as living healthy is no quarentee you're not going to get illness living unhealthy does not mean you are going to although it greatly increases your chances. I had a friend of mine, slim, trim, regular exerciser, never worried, who had a fatal heart attack at age 46. Does this mean living a healthy lifestyle increase you chances of having a heart attck? No, it means he went against statistical averages just as a few people with unhealthy lifestyles never have problems do.

Remember when eggs were bad for you too?...:biggrin_25523:

I'm not gonna say the study is wrong, or even argue about that, but have you ever noticed that when you go to the doctor for something they always blame it on smoking?

We all know smoking is bad for you, but sometimes it seems they go out of their way to make it the problems of everything....

Next we will be hearing its the leading cause of hunger in some foreign country or its the cause of the war overseas...:biggrin_2559:

I hear ya on that one Les! It does get old. Never mind the car exhaust we are all breathing, or the stuff that comes from factories and power facilities, etc.

I do know that when I smoke my blood sugar levels are higher and more erratic. I also know my breathing is laboured and energy level is lower. I look at the scum on my ashtray and realizing that is what I'm putting in my body can't be good for me. The worst effects are not caused by tobacco but by the additives put in cigarettes.

I've been 13 hours 38 minutes and 17 seconds without a cigarette. So far it has not changed my laid back personality or made me irattitable and if you don't like it shove where the sun never shines you mangy potlicker. :biggrin_25523:

I'd have been ready to strangle someone after that long. I agree that the additives are a big part of the problem. The additives are also the reason they are so danged addictive.

I will be quitting once I have completely gotten the mind set in place to do it. I am close on that, and getting closer each day. I have to have myself in the right mind set to do it, or I will be an extremely unpleasant person to be around. I know, I have tried going cold turkey before without the right mindset!

I quit nearly 3 years ago, after doing a healthy 2 packs a day for more years than I care to count. I have to make an effort to remember waking up feeling like I was already dead, getting out of breath even thinking about exercise and being terrified at the very thought of not having my next "fix".

Now, I take my 7 year old son and his friends swimming and doing other activities. I feel, and look, better and I don't waste a whole heap of cash. The equivalent pay rise when I quit was not likely to happen any other way.
