I've read a number of postings on this forum and have a general idea of what the 'typical' trucker makes in salary.

I suspect that if a trucker does not adhere to a disciplined financial budget while on the road, they could spend more then they take in. Eating at the buffet's, tips for the waitress, showers, cigarettes (I've noticed many truckers engage in this expensive habit), coffee, subway, lot lizards, massages, CB radios, the list is endless.

The temptation to spend money is always there. Are there any stories where a trucker actually spent an entire paycheck over a long period of time while on the road?

Some guys just have to have all the bells and whistles...

Company drivers, in most cases can't modify their trucks. Eventually you have all the crap you really need, and a lot you don't.

I might buy a movie now and then, but really my money is spent on food these days... With an occasional replacement of worn out gloves, or restocking of office supplies.

I got a massage once... Go figure, the cliche was true in this case... Lady was ugly and I wasn't having any of that. Her English was so bad, she propositioned me 3 times before I figured out what the hell she was asking me.

There are a few truck stops out here that are practically next door to strip clubs... It's not the same with out a few drinks and a couple buddies to hoot and hollar with.

I started an IRA account and religiously put 100 dollars per week into it, as you are allowed $5k per calendar year. On top of my company 401k. You could do the same with just a savings account and take really nice vacation every year.

Discipline, and budget. Make a list of a weeks worth of food, buy it at wal mart and budget a couple extra dollars for toiletries that you normally don't buy on a weekly basis... Also to cover price fluctuations and the varying sales tax around the country.

Stick to your plan and you'd be suprised with what's left over every week.

Once I spent my whole paycheck in 5 hours shopping in Ontario in California while I was waiting for a load at the TA and I decied to walk to the outlet near the truckstop and had to catch a ride back to the truckstop I had so much stuff.

When I lived in Nevada, many co-workers were down at the casino, cashed their checks there and were broke in a matter of hours.

You need to start asking those lot lizards for the $5 special.
Also ask if she takes coupons.

I learned a long time ago...

When I go into Nevada with money, I come out broke. When I go into Nevada broke, I come out broke!

So I started going in broke! Sometimes I'll get a little frisky & drop a $100. But it I very rarely do that anymore!
