thats a shame and sorry to hear of this.... a shame anytime anyones life is taken....

kind of reminds me of when i used to run a tow truck.... i was a wreck chaser in Philadelphia.... and the company i towed for was also AAA dispatched...and in Phila. you work 76,676 and 95 on rotation with AAA, we had a nextel for AAA calls, when we got a call we had to go... one night, my partner and i were sitting around, waiting for a wreck, as sick as that is, but it was our way of making money....anyway.... we got both got a AAA call.... i was in our pick up, and my partner was on our flatbed, they called and told me to go with him to expidite the clean up of a wreck on 76, just inside the phila boundy... we go to the scene and it was on both the wb and eb sides.... all closed down..... state police told me and my partner to go around to the eb side and get the honda on that side.... he told us where to take it.... he hooks up to the car... i get the owner to sign off on the tow, and off we go.... we got to where we drop the car, i go inside to take care of paper work, cause we had to go back.... when i go back to the flatbed, my partner was as white as a ghost and looked as if he just seen one.... throwing up he couldnt even talk, and just pointed to the underneth of the honda.... i get the flash light... look under the car... and theres a body of an old man stuck to the underside of the car.... typiclly u hook the cars in the front and the rear... we were only going 5 miles away and only used the winch to keep the car in place due to being rushed my highway patrol and aaa to hurry back to get the other cars..... turns out, a car broke down on the wb side, and the driver decided it would be a great idea to take off across 2 lanes of w.b traffic, attempt to cross over the jersey barrier and across both lanes of the eb side.... he obviously didnt make it.....
i dont know what could have came across this guy... i dont know why he would have thought that he could have made across the wall let alone 4 lanes of traffic..... a sure shame...
i started wearing the neon greem vest when i was running a tow truck, and even now while im driving a big truck.... i use it often at shippers recievers, and now 3 times when iv found myself broke down on the side of the rad and putting my orange triagles out i always use my green vest...
it amzes me at the amount of driver i see putting the tris out with out wearing a vest.... yeah it may take u only 2 mins to put them out.... but it take less the a second for a car or truck to kill you because they didnt see you.....
think about it... most reflectors are either beside the driver seat, or in the compartment under the bunk on the driver side....
i prefer to be seen then not

You are very right. It happened on Jan/05 around 19:00. It was dark, raining and snowing a little. I didn't see when it happened but heard that flatbed hit Swift driver with front bumper and dragged him... I saw the body of dead driver lying on the ground right in front of flatbed front bumper on the passenger side... :frown:

When walking in parking lots, keep your head up, constantly looking around, and make eye contact with drivers, don't assume they will wait for you to cross in front of them before they leave... And avoid walking between back to back trailers or close to their rear bumper... You never know if they will back up with no warning and hit you.

Nowadays I also drive slowly at truck stops, 5 mph or less... on that particular night, I had to open my windows to be able to see outside and do my backing...

I didn't see any news crew there, no TV, nothing.... I wonder how many accidents like these happen but are not reported to the public. I had my old camcorder with me and videotaped the police cars, ambulance, flatbed, and paramedics carrying the stratcher... I could see everything from inside of my truck.

Not to be negative, but if it had been a shopper at a mall, it would have made national news. Since it was "just a truck driver"... you can fill in the rest.

After watching a JB Hunt driver slide into a parking lot like a bat out of hell and nearly slamming into 6 parked trucks sideways I stay on the grass. If I slip in the snow I can handle that, getting hit by the guy who wanted the last parking space, no thanks.

It is always sad news when we lose one of our own.

We should all take a moment to remember that things can go wrong in a matter of seconds, and you can never take them back.

My condolences to the family of the deceased, and I would hope the driver driving the flat bed is able to deal with thier grief in a manner that allows them to move forward with life while learning the lessons of what happened.

Does anyone notice no one seems to open there windows or doors anymore when backing up? Yes, the weather might suck outside, but once you start turning, the reality of the situation is you can't see much of anything in your mirrors. So because it's cold outside, or people are just lazy, they refuse to roll down the window or open the door.

In the KW's with the daylight doors, there is ESPECIALLY no excuse for this. The windows are huge, and all I ever did was roll the window down completely, stand up, and stick half my body out the window past the stack. I still had excellent pedal control and I could see everything, which in turn allows me to make a good judgment call on distance and angle.

Really to bad about the driver. No one ever imagines they will go out this way...horrible. The poor family.
