This is my first year OTR, so I have NO idea what I'm suposed to do or how to Itemize my taxes. I usually just go down to H&R Block and come home with a few thousand dollars...but I've read here not to go to them for trucker taxes.
So does anyone know a good Trucker Tax Person in NC?
Thanks in Advance!

I just use Turbo-Tax online. We never ended up using the expenses from hubby's trucking as we do better with standard deductions . . . kids still at home. Turbo Tax does walk you through everything very nicely though. You could always try it, and decide once you have gone through every thing whether you want to go through them or not. Only charge if you actually file through them.

I did my own taxes with it when I was 16 and It was wayyy to much work lol. I like the drop it off slide my card and wait for my check method lol

Got ya!
The only time I have ever paid anyone to do my taxes was the 2 years my cleaning biz had employees. Otherwise I have always done them myself.
Someone will be along to recommend someone for ya!American-Trucker Thanks this. -
I've used taxactonline.com - it's free, except for a small fee to prepare a state filing, if applicable. It actually asks you about the per diem write off in the transportation industry. First program I've seen. free download, nothing to buy, been using it for 3 years.

Tax Act Professional version is one of the 3 that I use. Depends on the return and the work and detail I want to present to the client.

Read on JCT thread (in the good trucking company section) started by LMB. He's based out of NC & I recall him mentioning he uses an accountant he's been using for many years (in NC). Please don't ask me what page he said this on, as the thread is like 700 pages long.
Anyway; LMB is in his 60's or 70's. Probably can't hurt to ask him about his accountant.
Hope this helps.Lilbit and American-Trucker Thank this. -
As Lilbit mentioned, don't be afraid to use a program like TurboTax to do your taxes. You can use the free online version to get the hang of it and you'll find it simpler than you thought. The program literally walks you through the process and it doesn't take long. I prefer the Deluxe version ($49) because it includes eFile and does the state return.
I'm not a fan of having my taxes prepared and getting an "instant return" just so I can get my mitts on the money a little sooner. Preparers that offer that service charge you for the speedy refund so you're essentially getting a temporary loan at an unattractive interest rate. With eFile you're have your refund in a few days.
The only reason people suggest a professional preparer (with knowledge of trucking) is because some folks can't handle the simple steps involved in filing or when itemized deductions are involved and they can get a little complicated. Using a professional doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get more money back, or even an error free return. Pros make mistakes too and every year investment magazines like "Money" point them out.
You are a company driver and should have no problem using the standard deduction unless you have some serious deductions that are unrelated to trucking. -
