    Hey All,
Maybe I missed it - if so please direct me - has anyone talked about Ruan's food grade op out of Ripon? I thought I read somewhere else they were bought out by IRT or someone?? I'm narrowing the hunt for an OTR tank outfit here in the SoCal area - IRT is my leader, so, any input on these guys or any others out here would be appreciated.

    Thanks and be safe!

Try Titanium Dioxide Slurry, 22lb/gal so 2150 gal = 48K...used to load it in a 5,000 gal 'tight fill' and it rolled around like a bowling ball back there!

At least Sulfuric Acid [15.63 lb/gal] was in a smaller barrel...3137 Gal = 48K...had a driver introduce a rookie mechanic to Mr. Sergio one night, he came out of the plant and stopped on the ramp up into the shop & rocked back 'N forth a few times b/4 pulling into the bay and locking down the brakes.

I walked out as he grabbed the mechanic round the shoulders and stated pushing his face down to look at his drive tires. I heard Sergio bounce off the back head and when he hit the front of the tank the whole rig screeched forward about 6" leaving 18 small black marks on the concrete. The kid's eyes grew real big!

We also did Chlorosulfonic Acid, a water reactive and fuming concentrated acid. DuPont made us wash the tankers about once a month so we used this as the 'acid' test for new drivers...they would take it to the wash rack and would be siting in the cab and not notice the cleaners chaining the back bumper down.

The man up top would wipe the spinner off and slowly open the tank & then all the cleaners would leave, last one out the door would hit the cold water pump...

The back of the trailer used to jump up N down 'bout 6" and the whole top of the washrack would fill with dense white smoke....

Any new guy who came back and said 'I owe you one!' was a keeper...:biggrin_2551:

Our boss wouldn't let us warn a new guy b/4 sending to the cleaning rack. The rapid introduction of water to the water reactive acid used to make the whole trailer jump up and down while making booming noises and thick dense smoke...any new driver who came back twitchin' & scared wasn't gonna last.

We had one product [Dimethyl Sulfate] that we could not unload during the rain 'cause it looked like water so you could not see any leaks and the fumes would turn to strong acid in your lungs...it could also be absorbed thru your skin and would attack your blood cells...either way you were dead.

I won't defend his way of thinking but it did speed up the process of getting rid of those guys who didn't belong.

    haha, thats awesome :biggrin_25514:

You should get that on video.

Don't you wear a protective suit and respirator when unloading those kind of chemicals?

These days a driver probably wouldn't unload such a product. It would be handled by the customer. If it was your chemical plant would you risk letting a truck driver that you didn't train unload something that could kill people at the plant?

    oh, sorry

I think I just thought if he was that close he'd still have to wear one. Ignorance of how it all works is all.

Edit: Still need a video though :)
