Got a new update on the turbo issues I was having.

Specs: Detroit 60 series (500hp model, think 12.7) in a freight shaker classic XL. 656k on the clock.

Turbo makes a coughing noise, then black smoke out the stacks and a loss of power.

Was doing my pretrip today, and noticed something new. I have OIL...in my exhaust track. Its leaking where the turbo charger connects to the exhaust train, and spattering back onto other parts of the engine. Light was PERFECT to see it today. So, I have at least a bad gasket there.....but thats really NOT the issue......

Should there be oil there? I think not. I would think that means we've got a bad piston ring or more, the rate its sucking down oil seems to have increased as well. We put 4.5 gallons into it for an 800 mile trip, and its saying its low AGAIN! I can't find any other oil on the engine either, so I don't think its leaking.

We've talked to the owner, and FINALLY he's gonna listen to us. I think it needs at minimum a top end rebuild, but I'm looking for other opinions. I want to approach him with more than just "hey its leaking oil here" ya know? Hopefully he'll see the importance of this issue.

This is wierd, my boss is like yours, he just got a new turbo put on his iveco and it immeadiately developed the exact same problem, I told him that the engine needs rebuilding and he just does not care, the problem is that the old turbo was only producing about 10psi and now with the new one producing about 30psi (as it should) it now puts more pressure on the rings (the correct amount) which they cant handle because they are stuffed.

NOT a mechanic, so take it FWIW...

Are you sure it's not the Turbo that is leaking the oil? Only experience I have with Turbo's aside from the truck is with my wife's Volvo and it has an oil line going to the Turbo itself. Was told by a mechanic to keep a good close eye on this, as if it starts leaking, and deprives the Turbo of enough oil things would get ugly and FAST...

probabely the seal in your turbo--engine is more than likely ok--but that turbo should get looked at pretty quick--if that seal lets loose you pretty much pump all of your oil out the exhaust

It was in the shop today, 1560 bucks later, its out with a new turbo and seals. Apparently it blew some seal that was allowing it to draw in oil. Not sure how that works as I'm not a diesel mechanic, and haven't done alot of work with turbos, we'll see what sunday brings.

The price of turbos vary greatly with the age of the eengine, older simple turbos are much cheaper than the new variable pitch ones.
