Hi, I've recently talked to a recruiter about going to the Conway apprentice program. Legally, I know he cant discourage me from the program because I'm in the National Guard. That's why I'd like any info from truckers who need to leave for drill weekends and how accommodating the companies have been.

I have never known a recruiter to discourage anyone, and sometimes they should. :yes2557:

Let me see if I have this right. You're in the guard now and you want to get some training from an outside trucking company. Is that right? If it is just be warned that you training should come to an end where you'll be able to put that training to use. IOW's if you just take the trining now and come back a year later they may make you do it over again. I don't agree with that because I believe you should get quailified on as much as the equipment you can. Like a Dozer, Scaper, Grader, Dumds. Bomb movers. and so on. The way we look at it you already had the schiool just a little time by youself and you'd be back on it.

A few years ago I was in the Guard and looking for a full-time job, so I talked to a Swift recruiter. He said they have a number of drivers that are in the Guard/Reserves, but they often have to work out alternate drill dates with their units because the company can't guarantee that you'll be home on time for drill.

Since you're looking at Conway already, why not try to get a job with Conway Freight? Even if you have to start on the dock, it would likely be a decent job with opportunity for advancement, and you'd be able to make it to your drills.

Careful of what recuiters promise/say - I don't know if you could (since you don't work for the company yet) but maybe talk to the HR dept and see what their policy is... just a thought...
