hey there,
im new to this whole forum thing but i was looking for some help. Im looking at a 1981 kenworth w900 day cab to haul my belly dump because my old international is on its last leg. The truck is in really good shape body and frame wise and it has good rubber. The owner said the brakes where really good when parked it, but the truck was parked about 3 years ago and has not been started since. it has a 6v92TTA detroit and a 9 speed and 390 rockwell rears. The guy only wants $3,000 for the truck, is this a good buy or has that motor just been sitting to long?
thanks

Thats a long time sitting, what I would do is ask if I could try and get it started before paying any money. If it starts you still may have problems with oil leaks, ect. Good luck.

ya it is, i think im going to take some fresh fuel and batteries down and see if i can prime the fuel lines and get it to fire up, thanks

Loosen up the oil drain plug and watch for water/anti-freeze. Antifreeze will kill a 6V92 in a heartbeat. If that is all right, and you buy it, put in rod and main bearings right away. They are cheap and easy to do. They are known to spin bearings when the bearings get worn or anti-freeze gets to them.
If it is a 6V92 TTA at 335, they are fairly stout engines. The plate on the valve cover will tell you this information. The A in the engine number makes the difference, as this stands for aftercooled. The aftercooler is mounted under the blower, in the block.
