"I tried to point out to everyone that would listen, that I never, had anything to do with lumber-tarps, during my training. Sure enough, first week out, I get 3 lumber-tarp loads, and I'm getting my nose smacked with a newspaper cause it takes me 5 hours to finish. "
Lumber tarps are the same as steel tarps just bigger. The trick to lumber tarps is to get everything square on top of the load before you let the sides down. I found its easier to do this if you roll the tarps in quarters not thirds.

Regarding the 7/3-7/4 program . . . how does that rotate? Work Monday to Sunday, off Monday to Thursday THEN work Friday to Thursday off Friday to Sunday?
-
It depends how they work you into the rotation. You start on saturday, work seven days, back on fri. off for 4 days, start on wed, back on tuesday. off for 3 days, then leave out on sat for another week. and on and on. You will leave out on a saturday or a wed.

I'm in school for my CDL and hope to go with Roehl after (if!) I get my CDL license. The orientation/first day backing really worries me - When I get to orientation will I'll be asked to leave because it takes me 20 minutes to back the truck into a spot?? How often are people asked to leave an orientation at Roehl - for backing, anyway? Does anybody know?
-
just let them know your having trouble backing, when you go out with your trainer he will get you going.

Java,
I was worried about getting past the 1st day evaluation that Roehl gives CDL-school graduates. I've heard that some companies ask people to leave orientation Before they get to training. From everything I've read about Roehl, I know that if I got a trainer, s/he would definitely help me; I'm worried about being good enough to make it through the Orientation skills assessment - to even GET a trainer...That's why I was asking if how tough Roehl's orientation/1st day assessment was. I have to pass that first...
Thanks

If your only problem is backing don't sweat it. They will work with you. They just want to make sure you are not a danger behind the wheel. If you are they could ask you to leave. I am thinking about going to school with Roehl and backing is my concern. If you are still in school see if you can get time to practice backing up. Sometimes the pressure of performing under watching eyes will make you so nervous that you can't do it right.

Lkat, Practice, practice, and more practice. Be patient when backing. If it is sight side backing look out the window until you feel comfortable. Then start using the mirrors. It will come to you. BTW which part of backing do you have the problem with.
You did say that you were in school?

its been 4.5 years for me since i went though orientation but it wasnt bad the only two out of thirty that went home was one trouble maker and one had a hernia in growen, the main thing is to get approved if you have made that far your ok.during orientation first day is physical and alittle class room from then on its classroom and on yard training[driving around training course]their a real nice group of people they dont exspect you to know much.the may thing is keep your nose clean dont go out and mess up with that group of trouble makers that are all ways in the group, roehl hears about of every screw up at the hotel.

Thanks everybody for your responses. I am in school and still practicing backing. I know it takes practice; but practice takes time and equipment. We have a big class and everyone has to share the equipment. I'm not even really nervous about it, I know I'm on a learning curve and with time, I'll get better. My main concern was how good I had to be at backing test to get past the orientation skills assessment.
(If I pass that, I feel so sorry for my trainer! I'll buy him/her the biggest bag of doughnuts or doritos, and a case of Coca-cola they can munch on while watching me practice backing in some yard over & over & over... hahaha!!)
