We are a married couple bouth 45. Due to layoffs with both of our jobs we have lost our apartment and are living in a motel doing odd jobs. We really need a career as a husband / wife team with a good company that offers training. I have a certificate from the defunct MTA tractor trailer school (Graduated 1988), but no CDL. My wife is green. We would like to find a school where we could ride together and I can act as her trainer once we are rolling on the road. She does not feel comfortable alone with a male trainer after reading some horror stories on the internet. What company is the best to apply to where they get you on the road QUICKLY, treat you with respect and are fair to the hardworking team drivers. We thought about CR England, but were turned off by some really bad posts. Both of us are hard working and professionals. No recruiters PLEASE, we want opinions from real drivers.

First, welcome to the forum. I am not a driver but hope I can help a little bit.

Go to your unemployment office and see if you qualify for job training....then check out private/college CDL classes for the both of you. DONT go to a company sponsored program unless that is your last resort.

Getting out on the road quickly is not the answer, you need a good CDL course and training program that will teach you what you need to know to be safe and successful in the lifestyle of trucking...if you both go to school at the same time, there are some companies that will let you train together (have to research that one)

After you have gotten your CDL and have worked for a company (to meet their requirements) you may become a trainer then you could check into training your wife.....most places it takes about 6 months or longer AFTER you start to drive solo to be considered for a trainers program.

I know someone who went with werner (is still there after 2 years) and says he is quite happy. NOT saying werner is any good by ANY means, just passing on the info.

Its going to be very hard for you to be her trainer with out some experiance and like the other one said you could go get yours and after a while be her trainer. Or you could look for the one or 2 companys that would train you both as a couple. i did that at one company i was a triner for but it was not the rule more like an exception. There are some also that have husband and wife trainers where she will train the wife and he will train the husband so the HE/SHe problem dosen't come into play. I am very happily married and wouldn't want to train some one elses wife its just asking for all kinds of problems all the way around. I would do some serious research and try and get with the state like the other one said since if you can go to a vo tech or something you willget better training and you will also have a larger choice of companies to go to after training.

Sorry that you went to MTA they were a joke.
Some compines if not most of them will want you to do atleast a refresher as things have changed alot. If your wife has no exp she will probaly have to go through a full course check with the job service in your area for the w i a program they will most likly pay for the training and maybey housing too if you are lucky.

schnider will train you both togeather I have heard the only down side you may have to sign a contract for 12-18 months of slavery if you leave early it will cost about 4000.00 each to pay for the training.

I don't know where you live but Roehl Transport from Marshfield Ws has a cdl school. I don't know about you being your wife's trainer. Roehl requires a driver to be experienced then they review your driving record with them then you have to go through their trainer orientation and pass a test to be certified by them as a trainer. Roehl has women trainers.

Let me state....I do not like this company. SRT but....

They used to offer husband and wife training. Both on the same truck with a trainer.

    Other than that.....

Your now expired "training cert" will have to be renewed. So you both will have to attend school. Then find a job.

I understand your reasoning behind wanting to train your wife. But, realistically you should allow someone else to do it.

A good place to get your "new" CDL and training. Then team together. CFI out of Joplin, MO. While I don't recommend them for "experienced" drivers. I do for beginning drivers. You'll get a better training program (my opinion) and a much better...out of the box pay scale.

Ok I talked to my recruiter today and I asked her about what my chances are to have my husband who is a trainer already have me as a trainee. She said slim to none. Roehl doesn't like to put husbands and wives together as trainer and trainee. They think it would cause more stress than what there is normally and either the trainer would go super easy on her or super hard.

I worked as a training advisor for Schneider for 7 years and can tell you that you would be making a large mistake if you want to train your wife to drive. Driveing is a serious job. It's not a pass time, hobby, or anything other than an extremely demanding, tedious and tireing job. I'm sure you understand one mistake and it could be the end for the both of you. I'm not sure if they still train drivers, and I'm not a cheerleader or recruiter for them, I've seen many good things happen to good people there. I would also check with Roehl. Remember where ever you start, you're new to this buis. and as time goes on you'll find better deals. Put in your time, do the best job you can and in time you will find your balance.
