There is definitely a difference in some filters. there are a lot of folks who are adamant about using o.e.m. I say b.s. you have to go by your own experience. I did. for years I bought Donaldson oil & fuel filters. why? no reason. when I bought my first truck, I went to truckpro & asked for the filters I needed & they sold me Donaldson. years later I was at a Freightliner dealer & while there I asked if they had Donaldson fuel filters ? they did not but said they have Detroit diesel o.e.m. filters. they were $ 4.79 each. WOW! I have been paying just under $11.00 for my Donaldson fuel filters. so I bought 2 Detroit filters. then I asked about oil filters. they had the Detroit o.e.m. oil filters too. 50% less than what I was paying for Donaldson. so I bought a couple of those. I have the davco filter sys. where you see when to change the fuel filter. the Detroit filter would last approx 35,000 miles. the Donaldson would last approx 12,000 miles. the Donaldson would fill up faster every time. it definitely filtered better. maybe more microns. I don't know. it caught more contaminants & water. I have tried the comparison over 20 times over 150,000 miles. one time the o.e.m. the next time Donaldson. always the same results. now with the oil filters. I run local & would check the oil just after I serviced my truck. just looking at the oil on the dipstick every 300 miles until it is totally black. with the Donaldson the oil would stay cleaner & you could see the add/full etching on the dipstick thru the still clean oil, while checking this with the Detroit diesel o.e.m. filters, the oil turned black a lot sooner. i.m.o. it is because the Donaldson filtered better.
I know the die hard o.e.m. guy's will say o.e.m. is best for your truck. I say the mfr does not want your truck lasting like mine for over a million miles. think aftermarket parts are all inferior? go like me & try to get a o.e.m. air valve replacement. the o.e.m. is cheap plastic.the whole darn thing. you can get aftermarket that is still made of steel. I am talking about the several ones that are on the top of the rears, or in front under near the radiator, on my intl anyway.
Just my observation from my experience & my test. if any of you have the davco, try o.e.m. compared to Donaldson, you'll see. as far as Napa,Fleetguard, Baldwin, & others. I have no opinion on them. they could be as good, better or worse than any other.Big Duker Thanks this. -
Cut a Cat oil or fuel filter apart, then open up the filter you use now. Now decide for yourself. They are not the same
-
All I know is that my Cat filters get plugged way faster than the LuberFiners I've used.

In my area, the Napa parts (filters included) are usually the most expensive; they also appear to be the best made, among the "other than Cat" filters. (usually). FWIW, Donaldson appears to be another well made brand, from the outside; I have never performed surgery on any of them to examine the inside.
yeah that!
Filtration is just about the best out there, IMHO. I do think that most other makers provide an adequate product, too many people out there using other than Cat to think otherwise. For me, the few extra dollars spent to stay with Cat filters is peace of mind.
(confession)- I do use the Fleetguard fuel/water separator as the primary fuel filter. It seems to be less restrictive than the Cat brand, and hopefully the #1RO749 secondary will catch whatever slips by. -
Does the new Fleetguard f/w separator have a built-in stand pipe like the newer 256-8753 Cat filters and a few other brands I've seen?Last edited by a moderator: Feb 5, 2011

Stupidity rears it's ugly head, lol
CAT FLASH, I honestly have no idea what you are referring to-
Could you explain, or direct me to a site that I may get educated?
Is this an improvement over the old style?Last edited by a moderator: Feb 5, 2011

I have always been partial to NAPA and Luberfiner, but have used Wix and Fleetguard on occasion.
-
I always wanted to cut open filters to have a look at them, but was too cheap to waste a good filter, also I would not know what I am looking at. looking at the inside makings of a filter would not tell me what is going on while oil is running thru there. I am glad we have choices.
-
I was just looking at the Davco sight & others. the o.e.m. detroit diesel filter for my truck is 12 plus microns & Donaldson is 8 microns. O.E.M. 98% filtration Donaldson 99% filtration. now I see why the Donaldson cost more. it IS better.
