Working a small co. dragging b-trains around.
They have decided that paying by the hour is not cost effective.
1 Feb we will be paid by the tonne delivered.
    Questions?
    1. What is industry standard percentage per load?
    2. What documentation are they required to provide with your paycheck? ie. Are they required to provide you copies of the invoices given to producers?

I would like to hear any comments about this piece work system from drivers who are involved with it.

    1) Some where between 25% and 30% seems to be the norm for drivers working on a % split. Remember the FSC comes off the top before they calculate your pay.

    2) I'm not sure there are any hard regulations regarding documentation but either the Federal Dept of Labor or the Sask Dept of Labor can answer that. If the fleet runs exclusively in SK then ask your MLA for directions as to whom you call. If they run out of SK (even once) then your MP can direct you.

Obviously your employer is feeling the pinch and is looking for a way that he feels is more equitable. I wouldn't fear what's being offered but I would be conscious of it. A good day timer to track your hours broken down into loading/driving/anything else in one colored ink and the revenue per load in an other color makes it very easy to calculate hourly rate and also makes it easier if and when you need to sit down with the boss to discuss things.

    Good luck to you.

Manitoulin has been paying their peddle drivers by the weight for many years. According to one source it was a win win. Dead wood drivers left, hard workers made considerably more, and they had a new rapport with customers that was beneficial to the growth of Manitoulin.

Getting paid by the tonne is good but is there a set run you are on? What happens if today you take two loads to Saskatoon and tomorrow you get one run to Portage La Prairie? Same work but half the pay. What heppens if you have to take a straight trailer one day, you get your pay cut in half too?

I dont think its any different from hauling crude - we get paid by the cube. Its worked well for me. I would find out what the rate im getting paid - and if there is even a FSC.

Good point, had not thought of seasonal reduced weights. Shouldn't a 40 tonne min rate apply to all loads?

what should be and what you get paid is not always same, ask about rerouting(extra miles) during ban times
