Hello and greetings from the one and only,,,,SheepDog.
I have a question for you O/O's out there and I know you can help with this one..

I met a guy in Dec at the TA in Roanoke, VA and after talking for a while, he offered me a job driving one of his trucks. I told him I would call him, if I was interested, at a later time. He gave me his numbers and blah, blah, blah.

I called him just a couple days ago and here is the deal; I drive one of his trucks, get paid 25% of gross and he pays everything else. All I pay for is my own expenses and postage, if I want my paperwork mailed in by wendsday. Here is the kicker; He pays in cash, no tax deductions (unless I want him to). Also, he gives cash for fuel, tolls, scales and a little extra. I just turn in rest of cash and receipts at end of run. Run goes from Atlanta to Oregon and back to Charlotte, or Atlanta, than deadhead to WV or FL, than back to OR. Don't know exact locations but will be finding out friday the 11th. Same for exact route.

No electronic logs, no prepass, no ezpass or anything like that. Seems all is done so no tracking can be done.?? I don't have a problem with this so much but I wanted to get your opinions.

I am writing down questions to ask this guy before I jump at the job so anything else you can think of will be appreciated.

    Thanks again and God Bless,
    SheepDog

It all depends what the 25% is....what I mean is that 25% of cheap freight might not be much of anything, but if he hauls decent paying freight then it might not be bad. Also on a percentage deal you usually don't get paid for dead head miles, so ask what the average dead miles consist of. I would ask him to show you the average money in black and white you would be capable of making. And finally how do you know if he is actually going to pay you the "real" 25%.

Cash jobs are risky. Drivers often get into tax trouble.

I think you would be much better off if you had taxes taken out. These cash jobs usually do not work out.

Sorry if I sound negative. If you have a good driving record with 2 yrs. experience I think you can find a better deal.

Thanks for the replys thus far.
I did forget to mention that this job is "Fruits and Vegy's". Yep, reefer trailer.
I realize the tax situation I could get into but I am really not worried about that. Now as far as the actuall 25%, I have no idea how I would know for sure, if I am getting paid right. He has told me he makes about $9300 to $10,000 per run. I know from talking to him before that the run is a 7 day turn and than two days off for HOS restart. I do NOT run ellegal, period!

    Thanks again...

I work for 30% of what the truck settlement is every week. Taxes are taken out. I get a W2 each year.

I get a copy of the settlement from the company we are leased to. That is a great way to make sure you know the real rate each load paid the truck owner.

I have a company credit card. I have cash expense money. At the end of each month I turn in all charges and cash expenses I had for the month.

You stated the Owner was going to give you cash for fuel and ect. Dealing in all this cash could get messy.

:happy6:If you are hauling from Big A out to the left side, and bringing garbage back, it will probably be a tight fit on the log book running solo. Atlanta to Portland is about 2100 miles. Produce hauling from out yonder is usually team .:toothy7:

No workers comp, if you get hurt you are screwed. He probably does not pay his taxes either.
