I passed the CDL written tests but am having trouble figuring out how to pass the skills test. I've been told that some trucking companies help new drivers get their CDL by letting them use one of their trucks for the road test. Does anyone know which companies in Denver, CO, do this? Also, how exactly do I go about making this happen?

    Thank you!

How to pass the skills test is simple, go to a CDL school.

You need some experience with driving a big rig, and some training. The written part is a cake walk. There is a lot more than simply getting in a truck with a 48-53 foot trailer and going at it. Do you know how to double-clutch, use a transmission with a range selector, get around a corner without the rear tandems taking out a structure (or worse, a person)? Do you know how long it takes you to stop something that big (or with the lag in braking effect that is induced with air brakes), or how much room you need to merge in with traffic? Do you know how to back into tight spaces with a trailer? Do you know the laws that are different for you, once you get a CDL?
Not to mention, you need to know how to do a proper pre-trip inspection.

You need to either pay (yourself or through a government program) for an accredited school, or go through one of the mill schools (like Swift offers).

IF you have some experience/training already. CDL College will rent you a truck for the test. There are a couple others around Denver that will as well. Average price is 150 bucks to rent the truck. I know they also do hourly "practice" sessions at 70 bucks an hour. (this includes a licensed driver so your permit is enough). No, I don't work there, I just looked at them VERY closely for school, since I'm less than 15 minutes away.

Again, google is your friend! I know of a few around town here that have rental trucks for hourly rates, and for the test. Good luck, hope I helped a bit.
