Hello All,
First let me startout by saying that I am a US Army veteran. I am 23 y/o, and am single. I am looking to go OTR solo. I already have an intent to hire letter from Swift Transport, and am trying to get more.
I have a spotless criminal backround, and a clean MVR. I am looking into Mountaintop Truck Driving Institute, in Grantsville, MD to get my CDL's.
I am currently unemployed and living with my Mom. She just broke her leg, and I have to tend to her. (Family comes first!)
I applied to the Western MD Consortium for a grant to cover tuition, but have not heard back yet. I made a follow up call to them but they were all in a training meeting.
That's the background info.
Here's my question: If I don't get approved for the grant, where else can I get the money for my training? (Im broke btw!) I know there are a few companies that still do company sponsored training, but I have been told to steer clear of that cause they can fire me and then I have to pay all that money back.
What can I do if I don't get that grant?
Thanks for any and all advice in advance.

When I got discharged we had the GI Bill we could use for education. The amount was based on length of active service. Is this still available to you?

IDK, I will have to check into that. Thanks for the tip.

Call the school, ask about tuition assistance, and "casually" mention your service to our country. It might not get you full funding, but they usually jump through hoops to help a vet.
GI bill is also an option, if you paid into it. (unless that has changed in the last 16 years) You can also contact your state's welfare office and ask about workforce in action funding. (I heard this takes a while) There are several options out there to pay for schooling. You are still young, and your credit can get you into school without signing into indentured servant status.
You do have options, don't sign on with a mega carrier who will train you, without exhausting them. Nothing like writing your own ticket!milpotrucker Thanks this. -
GI Bill should be your first option, but the VA is so big and disorganized it's tough to figure out how to get the ball rolling. Contact the school to see if they have a VA representative on staff. If not, call the VA yourself and keep jumping through the hoops until you get the information you need.

Hey thanks for all the tips guys. I will research those options that were listed above, and hopefully see you on the road someday.
