Got asked again about my scanner equipment and it's legality across the fruited plains. So, to answer these questions I am posting this link. This is the BEST site to answer any questions anyone has regarding mobile scanner use.

So in the illegal states are they going to start locking up the race fans listening to the teams on the scanner? I wonder if the popo will have the paddy wagon backed up next to the scanner rental concession # Daytona?????

My advice is to click on the link I provided to answer any questions. He keeps his site current so email him for any specific information. Like I posted, it's the best site out there for this info.

I personally have no experience with Florida's stand on mobile scanners. I do hide it in New York however. Never had a problem anywhere else. However I hold a ham license as well so I am not expecting problems.

And anyway, cops have to reconize a scanner to to do anything about it. I've never been asked and I don't drawl attention to it even though it's right there for all of the world to see.

I work for the S.O. here in the jail radio shop.

The law requires that the radio be installed in your car so a hand held unit
is not illegal also it must be programmed to receive police/sheriff calls.
UNLESS they suppect your using it to run from the law they will not bother you.

Every scanner ever made all the way back to the crystal controlled scanners with the blinky lights covers at least 2 ham radio bands, namely 144-148 mhz and 430-450 mhz. If you really want to get technical, the two freqs that most radar detectors listen too are actually in experimental ham bands LOL

I spend a lot of time when I drive hoping I'll be able to contact another ham on one of the two microwave bands for which I have transmitters on my dash. I'm running my callsign in MCW, with extremely wide bandwidth.
I don't even turn on a radar detector near my car cuz it pins the needle as soon as I turn it on.
I'm not optimistic, so I only occasionally turn off the TX to listen for answers.
