I'm about to begin a new career. I've always wanted to be part of this great profession. The timing is finally right. I have spent the last 6 years at home raising my Daughter. Now that she's ready to leave home I can finally pursue my dream. I welcome all advice, but I especially want to hear the low down from the women out there getting it done. I'm a petite woman. I'm a little worried about the physical requirements of the job. CR England has offered to bring me on and train me to get my CDL. I'm also considering becoming a trainer for CR England. Does anybody have any advice about what I can expect as a petite driver behind the wheel of a big rig?

I would say you better read long and hard about CRE.
-
Well, being a petite female driving a big truck, you will probably get a lot of double takes where ever you go. I sure did! 5'2" little gal hopping out of truck just seems to draw the stares!
I would suggest looking at some companies other than CRE. They do NOT have a good reputation at all. Browse around the forum here and see what some of the others are saying! -
The physical requirements shouldn't be an issue. They weren't for me when I drove.
-
5'2"? You are a short stroke ain't cha?
You stand on the seat?
Jarhed1964 Thanks this. -
Nah! Didn't need to. Not with air ride! Now the older stuff, I might have had to!
-
Now I know why you and nic teamed. Air seat will raise you up, but then ya got to holler at nic to push on the pedals...
-
Actually, Nik & I never ran team together. I had already been out of the seat for a few years by time he got his CDL. There's no way I'd be able to drive anymore with my back being the mess it is.
I do really miss it though.

If there's any way for you to go to a private school or Community College to get your CDL, I'd strongly advise that.
Check with your state unemployment office. Some states pay for your cost to attend a local school. You don't have to be on unemployment necessarily.Patricksgirl and Lilbit Thank this. -
I second the notion of community college. Mine in SD offers it for 1500 and has a great tiny female instructor. As someone who is only 5 ft. I can say that there are some challenging things such as cleaning the windshield but you learn to climb. As for the air ride and reaching the petals I do it somehow lol!
I would definitely shy away from CRE. My tips for on the road are simple. Make sure you have a big gulp cup for um well the times there is no rest stop in sight. Carry a big stick in the truck to beat off the morons that dont take no thanks for a hint. Bring your own bottle of bleach spray for the showers. ALWAYS lock your truck even if you are only going in for a second.
Welcome!Lilbit Thanks this.
