Just wondering if somebody could make much money with there own truck getting local loads on load boards, or is that something that would be not worth it?

What do you mean by local stuff ? Under 50 miles ? Across town ? Some of it pays decent, but then you have to deal with loading/un loading times. So do you want to wait 5 hours to un load on a 50 mile run ?

Load boards will have the cheap stuff but shop around for some direct customers shouldn't be a problem in Chicago.
I've seen $250-$350 on loads posted on load boards seem to be the norm.Last edited: Feb 16, 2011

It seems to me that you have to have the right set-up in the Chicago area to make this work. I talked to some brokers on what on the surface seemed like decent pay for local when I had a day to wait on a load. But then on digging a little it would have been a nightmare for an OTR rig. They where day cab, 40 foot trailer type loads. So I stopped looking.
In the Peoria area CHR pays well on moving stuff for Catapillar. But it is hit and miss. If you want to go that way PM me and I will get you a contract at the office that handles the account. And it is not typical Cheap and Heavy rates. -
maybe its not so much local but 150 miles and under,

If I was going to do local stuff like I "think" your describing I would want to own about half a dozen trailers to go with my one truck.

The more direct customers you can get the better. Load boards are usually brokers pawnin off their crappy loads.

FYI...many companies have a $500.00 load minimum so you CAn make money if the broker pays fair...
