Personally, I wouldn't have a problem lying about it.
I would go in & tell them that I got pulled over again & sweet-talked the cop out of a ticket but he told me I was going to impound next time AND HE WOULD BE LOOKING FOR ME.

First off, DOT very rarely gives a warning on a violation....she got very lucky and the next time will get a fine or put Out of Service as mentioned above. The DOT warning is in the SD DOT electronic record and will be spotted the next time this trailer is pulled over, and then get your checkbook out.
I would go in to the boss and say: "I can't pull this trailer without the current tags....where should I look to find them?" And then, do not leave the office until he either finds them or tells you where to look and you find them....and if he balks, then tell him how the DOT has the info in their electronic record and the next stop they will take the trailer out of service and have a fine...........if that doesn't get the bosses attention, time to start looking for a new boss. Dumb bosses like this really piss me off.
She needs to be insistent but not overbearing about it....this is not something any driver should have to put up with. Current tags are mandatory, and not an option on a trailer....
My boss would never think about sending out a driver with a trailer without current tags on it..... heck, why even have plates on the trailer, just go withoutBig Don and rocknroll nik Thank this. -
If it is not legal, it shouldn't move off the lot! What if he is Bs'ing about having the tags renewed?

Some states give you a grace period because the DMV gets so backed up that when you send the plates in for renewal, it takes them 2 months to send them back. You can get away with it in that situation as long as you have all your paperwork in the truck. If the plates are at the office however, they need to be put on the vehicle.

My response was prompted by a memory...
When I was still somewhat green I was leased to a company that hauled auto parts from MI to TX. It was a team run but we did it solo.
Not a big deal back then but the overnight thing would bite you in the rear once in a while.
Check-call every 3-4 hours, start to finish.
There was only a couple hours slop to rest and if you got too tired to run safe the wisdom of the day was to pull into a scale-house and ask them to put you OOS because if you just 'called it' the company would pull you off the runs. I never heard of anybody getting cited over it & an OOS wasn't that big of a deal back then.
I was never big on turning myself in but there was a time or two when I pulled into a T/S just before or after the scales (in case those sneaky p ricks in dispatch had a way to check your location which was probably B/S but a wide-spread rumor at the time) and tell dispatch that I had gotten there with an escort & ordered not to leave for 8 hours.
It worked. -
