I drive a 2011 Cascadia, Detroit DT15 company truck. The truck requires def urea stuff. It currently has 51000 miles. The turbo just blew. Do you know what happens when you blow a turbo? Yeah, usually it pours black smoke out the exhaust stack. Not with a urea system. The urea system collects all that oil and smoke, then clogs up and requires a "full" rebuild. Probably is expensive too. We have been down for a week and still waiting on parts. This is a PITA on several different levels. All because of a turbo that used to be a 2 hr swap...

The urea catalistic converter is not so complex thing as you think. It is maze where exaust gas is kept with relitevially hight tempereture to keep reaction (at lower temparatures there is no Carbomide pirolysis reacion), but... on some trucks there is a soot filter built in converter. Mercedes makes it of something like a mineral wool, we used to throw it away. And we can see smoke at agressive acceleration. Fortunatly Mercedes put NOx sendor in exaust, but no smoke sensor and truck keeps running well

you will get second NOx sensor code.

I had to relocate this sensor, to keep it not in exaust gas, but in mix of fresh air and exaust gas. I did it on Actros MP3 with SCR. It was not so easy to find a place where I got no "change catalistic converter" message on dashboard.
