Hey guys, i'm seriously looking into getting my CDL and driving OTR. I had some basic questions i'll add as i go.

    1. when you're not driving, are you able to stay in the berth most of the time? do you have ac/heating? lights/electronics? Does the truck have to idle to do this?

    2. do you spend most of the day driving? are there alot times you have to sit and wait for whatever reason? like loading/unloading. this is not used towards the 10 hours you can drive a day?

    thanks

if your OTR all your time will be in your truck lol. Yes the truck will have heat and ac and yes you will need to idle the truck to use them....UNLESS you have an APU which will give you Heat/AC/Power or a Bunk Heater which will jusy give you heat. You can run off the batteries for power for a while without idleing then just run it for a little while to recharge. you'll need a Power Inverter to power anything thats not a 12v cig plug. Some companies DO NOT allow inverters so do you research when chooseing a company

I spend most of my day driving, it'll depend on who you work for, sometime you might sit ALL DAY waiting to be loaded or unloaded sometimes it'll just take a few minutes...

    We can Drive 11 hours a day...not 10.

as someone said, look through the threads here on this site, many of your questions will be answered.

however, when driving a truck, and let's say you go OTR (over the road) you will NOT be driving just days...you WILL BE driving nights, weekends, holidays, etc,etc..trucking just isn't a 9 to 5 job with regular breaks or many paid holidays or vacations. in fact with "some" trucking companies, you may have to work for (say) 2 years and only get 1 week off each year...one stinking week......after (say about) 3 years, you may have earned a second week's vacation...

now how do they pay you vacation time...?? usually a percentage of the yearly salary you made....sometimes a straight weeks pay...

    holiday pay....???

you'd be lucky you get home for ANY holiday.....and that ain't NO BULL....wannabe home for christmas...???

maybe some year you will be......it's NOT guaranteed you'll be home.....

unless you have a "local job" and those are few and far between....

in driving, it can be like the military..."hurry up and wait"...

so YOU WILL BE doing a whole lotta waiting, you may very well NOT GET PAID FOR......

trucking IS NOT a cure all for what ails anyone on unemployment or "always wanted to drive", or "always liked to drive", or "love's driving"....

it's a grinding and at time grueling job many regret getting into after as little as 1 month on the road.....

but read the plethora of threads here on the various boards we have and THEN ask questions...

There are tons of drivers that drive the truck all day, then climb in the sleeper all night. Watch TV, play computer games, talk on the cell phone etc. Me, I gotta get out of the truck every so often, whenever the chance comes along.

My truck is in the shop and I actually miss it.. kind of 2nd homesick :biggrin_2557:

As every has said yep you pretty much live in your truck.. I deliberately spend my. 10 downtime in rest areas. The scenery is usually much better and most times I can sit at a picinic table and just enjoy not moving, or vibrating..
