I've heard a lot of people using the service from Verizon. Sprint also has a similar service. From what I've heard coverage is pretty good with Verizon, but haven't heard from anyone with Sprint. You may be able to get the plug in device for free, and I think it's 50-60 a month.

 

The "Big" guys limit you to 5Gb, then they charge you xtra. Virgin Mobile is $40/mo, unlimited, but after 5Gb the cut the speed down. They use the Sprint network, and so far, I'm pleased with it. Been using it for about 6mo. You can get the USB device from WallyWorld, along with the monthly reup cards, if you don't want to use a credit card.

 

I currently have This AND Sprint. I will either ditch Sprint or return my Virgin Mobile modem back to Walmart, depending on how much they slow me down. They are claiming it will be throttled to 256 kbps. If that's the case, I can live with that. At that speed, youtube videos buffer a bit, but are still watchable.

Also, unless you bought the modem and activated it before Feb 15th, the $40 5 gig plan is no longer available. It's $50 with a 2.5 gig cap, then you are throttled down for the rest of the month. Still unlimited, but at slower speeds. is this a good deal? I'll find out after they start throttling me. If it's still at a usable speed, then not a bad deal.

It's too bad the $40 unlimited plan had to go away. From what I gather, there were too many people buying Mifi's and using them in their homes to hook up to their big tv's to replace their $100 per month cable or satellite tv service.


If you get one of these, definitely get it at Wally world, as they have a 90 day no questions asked return policy on these things.

 

Another option, for people with smart phones with unlimited web, ie android or the like. I downloaded an app that allows me to tether it to my laptop for unlimited 3g web. I've used it a few times at home and it's not too bad.

 

Would you be good enough to explain how this works in a little more detail? I have a verizon stick now--live in country--not many options--but we dont do much with it because it gets close to the 5g or k or whatever pretty quick. also between cell phones--family plan(used for biz and pleasure)etc. really looking for a way to cut some. Since I come from the last century I don't understand most of this stuff anyway? I have no idea what 3g web means

The android style phones, and probably most other smart phones, have an application market where you can download different things. I found one that uses the phone as a modem for a laptop to use for internet, using the internet plan I already had on my phone. All you do is download the program, plug the data cable from the phone to the computer, run the install, and bam, you have internet anywhere you have coverage. The 3g is the designation for the speed of the internet on the phone itself. I'm not sure what the speed actually is, but it's probably fairly close to what DSL is. Now there is a 4g out, that not too many markets have yet, that is supposed to be a bit faster. If there are any more specific questions I could try to answer them, especially after I use it for a while.

I have sprint. It costs me with all the taxes and crap about 90 a month. With unlimited web and texting, and free mobile to mobile calling. The coverage so far has been pretty good. I live in the mountains of TN and haven't ran into many areas without coverage.

Just do not say you do it when calling CS.
yes they can check it, but has no legal right to screen your traffic.
