This is my first time posting. I have been doing my research for a starter company here on this site for a while now. I picked two company's I thought would treat me fairly. I have had my cdl for the last 30 years never drove over the road and haven't drove a tractor trailer in 20 years. I knew that most company's would make me take cdl class. It is not a problem for me to have to take this step. I had decide I would take a truck company cdl class if they would except me.
I decided to try and join Stevens Trans. I filled out their on line job application last Thursday and they email me and ask me to call the recruiting office to go over my application. I give them a call and they tell me they are not hiring out of Michigan at this time. O well on to number 2 which is Central Refg. I recheck out their web site and ever thing looks good they are hiring in Michigan for trainees. So I fill out their on line application last night. My wife tells me a local company is hiring over the road drivers. I tell her that they want a least a year experience. She tells me so what you never know you might get hired. Yea Honey you think. LoL
I get a email this morning saying to call the recruiting office if i want to push along the application. So I give them a call. Dang they dont hire in Michigan. Yet their site says they do. Guess I will have to do more research. I check out the ad for the local company again. The ad now says would like 1 year experience. I figure I have a doctors appointment near them made be I'll go by there what could it hurt. All they can say is come back when you have a year under your belt. I go to the office and fill out a application while I'm filling it out a guy come by and ask what I'm doing I tell him and wait to hear that i need 1 year experience. But he doesn't we talk for about a hour then he tells me owns the company and tells me to take the application up stairs to the dispatcher when I'm done.I tell him thanks and go back to filling out the application. I go upstairs turn in my application to the dispatcher. She ask me if I would be able to take a drug test today. I ask her why and she said boss said I could have the job if i pass the drug test. I tell her yes no problem. She lets her boss know that I would. He comes and tells me about the job. 1 I will have to ride with another driver for a least 2 or 3 weeks. No problem there I wouldn't care if I ride with another driver for 6 or 8 weeks. 2 I will get paid by % of truck revenue. 3 I will rent the truck from the company per load. So if i dont pull a load there is no rent. I ask about contract figure it is a lease. He said there is no contract I just pay for rent of truck per load. okkkkkkkkkk. I will receive 58% of truck revenue. Then they will take out of my check 28% of revenue for truck rent and I will end up receiving 29% of truck revenue. I had him explain it to me on paper this how he showed say truck revenue is 10000 58% would be 580 truck rent would be 280 my paid would be 290.
I will pull from Michigan to Georgia or Alabama then pick up a load down there for return back to Michigan or to Canada. He told me I could deliver Canadian loads or if i didn't want to drive across the border I could leave the load in the yard and he would have a Canadan driver take it.
    4. I will have most weekends off. 5. The company will pay for fuel, tires, and repairs, and maintance. If I do some thing stupid like ripe off trailer door or bend bumper I would have to pay for it to be repaired.

I was hopeing some one could tell me if the paid looks right thanks.

If your looking at the lease option DONT. Just by scanning these boards the success rate is minimal no matter if your a newbie or have a business degree.

As a driver who hasnt driven in 20+ years your options are limited but Roehl takes new drivers and was great to me the first 3 years of my career. With yourself being in Michigan auto transport can be lucrative if you can find a carrier willing to train. Gooc luck.

Thanks He said it was not a lease but I would rent the truck per load no contract to sign. I have to ask alot more ? next week. I think my biggest problem in finding a first over the road job is living in michigan.

:biggrin_2558:Ask him plain and simple," AM I AN EMPLOYEE ? ". If not an employee , understand that clearly. No taxes with-held,no workers comp, no un-employment. Most deals as you describe are dubious. But a very few are good. Check carefully.:biggrin_2555:

Employees don't "rent" trucks from their employer. You need to pass on this.

the numbers were examples for a load not a week. I would receive 58% of the pay that the company would receive from the shipper.

Thanks for the info on the taxes, unemployment, and workers comp. I have run a dba for 25 years so I understand that part well.

Then this is a tax scam on the part of your prospective "employer," and you should know that. Employees do not receive 1099 forms - only independent contractors. As such you should have the right to choose which loads you pull, and by law must be at financial risk.
