When I started my career in 1979 with a major airline I was assigned as a second officer (flight engineer) and during cruise we didn;t have much to do. I use to tune in our HF radios to special (secret) freqs and talk to the truckers below us. Most of the time they didn't believe we were scooting along at 35,000 feet but they loved it. I learned these freqs from the engineers I flew with on C-130's in the USAF. I passed these techniques along to some of my friends and we had a great time until our airline blocked our radios--little bands would show in the number window when we hit these freqs. It seems our high power was blowing out quite a few radios for the "landlubbers" and they were a bit upset. I've also had "ham" transmissions bleed over onto my VHF freqs. We could hear their transmissions but could not answer.

Aircraft and the nearest ham band are about 10 mhz apart in 47 years on 2 meters I have never heard a signal that wide.

WA--why would I post something that isn't true? I'm a retired airline pilot and I can tell you we heard "ham" transmissions. Be it "skip", sun spots, or aliens we heard them--we knew they were ham by all the call signs and language. Stranger things have happened so don't let your techno wisdom cloud your mind. I believe some of the other posters--you guys think you know it all. I guess I dreamed it but I have heard some weird things from flying for 40 years or so. I'll leave you and your buds alone now--thought my story would be fun reading.

WA--PS--maybe you should go high altitude flying and then you might "hear" a band that wide. It's aliens I tell you!!

Commercial airliners use HF shortwave radio to talk to company people and air traffic control once they leave US air space and head out over water. The mode is sideband. Ships do this too.
